Government plans to grant more freedom to London’s healthcare trusts could see hundreds of new homes being built on unused former hospital sites.
By devolving control of the proceeds of land sales to individual trusts, it is also hoped that profits will be put straight back into healthcare services.
Mayor Boris Johnson said: “There's going to be a much more intensive effort to look at that property portfolio that's available, huge sites full of buddleia and nothing happening at all, use the receipts from that land to regenerate the health care facilities but also to provide great homes for Londoners.
“If you're an NHS trust hospital, what happens when your land is sold, the receipts have to go to the Treasury. We want to try to keep the receipts in London for the benefit of London patients but also so that we can build new homes in London.”
Earlier this month, Johnson announced a new funding model to boost Shared Ownership in London, using his First Steps Challenge Fund to develop two schemes of hundreds of new homes with private finance Chaco Limited and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham,
Johnson remarked: “We've already helped 52,000 Londoners to buy their first home and realise their dream, and I'm very pleased that the first institutional investors have come on board through my First Steps Challenge Fund. This is a great vote of confidence in a housing model which is incredibly popular with consumers, and we need to see more of it in London.”
