Surveyors say house prices have witnessed their biggest April fall for six years, with many areas of the South East finding that asking prices are not being achieved.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) said upper- and middle-priced tiers of the market are proving the most challenging of all: that is, those properties that are put on the market priced at £500,000 or more – which is, realistically, the cost of a family home in many parts of the South East.

This is bad news for many sellers, but potentially better news for buyers who have previously found themselves struggling to get a foot on the property ladder, and for those who wish to upsize to fit growing space requirements.
