Location Of The Day: Corby, Northamptonshire

Keith OsborneWhile there will almost certainly be more to the final choice of brand new home than ‘location, location, location’, the house-hunting process can often start with what a village, town or city can offer across many aspects of life. The WhatHouse.com team is constantly looking around Britain for some of the best locations to consider purchasing a new build home.
Corby is in the north of Northamptonshire, close to the borders with Rutland and Leicestershire. From a population of around 1,300 in the early 1930s, its designation as a New Town in the 1950s and an Enterprise Zone in the 1980s has led to it now being home to over 60,000 people.
Its central England location, under an hour from a host of major towns and cities, can make it a cost-effective choice for a work commute. The opening of a new station in 2009 brought even better connectivity and it is under 75 minutes from London St Pancras, compared to around two hours by road.
For shopping and places to eat and drink, the centre of the town has lots to offer with a mix of big-brand and independent shops and supermarkets, cafés, pubs and restaurants. It also hosts a good range of useful amenities and healthcare facilities.
Vital to families, Corby offers some high-quality education for children of all ages, including Brooke Weston Academy, Corby Primary Academy and Corby Technical School among those rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.
For leisure time, there’s a multiplex cinema, gyms, numerous sports clubs, a skate park and lots of recreation grounds and open space to enjoy. The Corby East Midlands International Pool is one of the town’s most high-profile assets and offers long and short pools for swimming/diving as well as a fun one for kids, as well as a large gym and studio. There are a number of country parks and heritage sites in the surrounding area.
