Housing – and especially the provision of new homes – seems to have topped the agenda in the capital following the announcement of Zac Goldsmith as the Conservative candidate for the next Mayor of London and Sadiq Khan as his Labour adversary.
Goldsmith has proposed knocking down hundreds of council homes from the 1950s and 1960s which are now unfit for purpose and replacing them with low-rise communities of truly affordable new homes.
“Consider the 3,500 Fifties and Sixties estates, many of them poorly designed, many of them coming to the end of their lives. With the consent of the local community — and with guarantees that they won’t be priced out — we have a chance to rebuild them and provide more homes, better communities, and more beautiful streetscapes,” he said.
Khan announced recently: “I’m going to make the election in May a referendum on London’s housing crisis. There is one thing above all others that I’m determined to do for our city, and that is to make it more affordable to buy or rent a home of your own.”
He has set out plans to establish a ‘Homes for Londoners’ team in City Hall which would work with councils and developers to accelerate the delivery of affordable housing around the capital.
