With the nation’s shortage of new build homes regularly making headlines, it was perhaps inevitable that the green belt may eventually be threatened by plans to create enough property to accommodate our growing population – a threat that seems to apply to Greater Manchester as elsewhere.
The Manchester Evening News recently discovered that the region’s councils’ plans include many developments that encroach on green belt land, and that one – Stockport – has no option but to do so, due to a lack of alternative sites. The plan, known as the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework, is scheduled for public consultation this October.
Plans have been drawn up to build some 225,000 new homes in and around Greater Manchester by 2035, including 61,000 in the city itself on brownfield land, but areas such as Bury, Trafford and Stockport will require greenfield land to be used. One developer, Peel, is reported to want to build 20,000 homes, most on green belt
A statement from Cllr Richard Farnell, the combined authority’s lead for planning and housing, said: “Greater Manchester (GM) is growing and we know our population will continue to grow over the next 20 years. GM’s ten local authorities are working together to make sure our land and transport network is used in the best way possible to meet the needs of everyone who lives and works here and those who will do so in the future. We will continue to prioritise development of brownfield sites as the first priority across Greater Manchester.”
Here are our favourite current new build homes in the region, with our favourites from Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Cumbria and Lancashire…
