Keith OsborneReading has always been one of the county’s major towns and grew considerably in the 19th century due to exceptional road, rail and canal services serving manufacturing, ironworks and brewing industries, and it continues to be a very popular place to live – leading to many brand new homes being built here.
There has been considerable investment in the area already, with further plans for updating the town centre. While there have been numerous (as yet unsuccessful) applications from authorities here for status as a city, the borough of Reading certainly has an impressive array of features in addition to the many shops and amenities at its centre.
For education, many of the state primary and secondary schools in the area are rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and there are a number of respected independent schools as well. Further education is available at several colleges around town with courses on many subjects, from entrepreneurship to Chinese medicine. The University of Reading has been going for over 90 years now and has around 23,000 students across 150 courses, with the site in the south-east of town one of four campuses in the UK and overseas.
For sports enthusiasts, there are a host of clubs, fitness, leisure centres and pools too, and the landmark Madejski Stadium is the home ground for Reading Football Club. With the River Thames running through the borough, there’s plenty to keep fans of rowing and canoeing happy, and walkers, runners and cyclists have many routes to follow along the river and through the town’s numerous public green spaces.
The M4 passes to the south of town and the railway station has outstanding regular services to destinations across the country. It is the western terminus of the Elizabeth line with journey times of 54 minutes to Tottenham Court Road and 66 minutes to Canary Wharf. Fast National Rail services take little more than 20 minutes to reach Paddington station.
