#TuesdayTips - the perfect sleep needs the perfect bedroom

Posted 8 March 2016 by Helen Christie

Here at WhatHouse?, we know that getting a good night’s sleep is always important, but how can you ensure that you are getting the best sleep you can?

Where you sleep is important, ensuring your bedroom is right for you is key. The bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the house, and while you want your bedroom to be a beautiful sanctuary filled with lovely colours and natural light during the day, at night you want the complete opposite.

Embrace the darkness

Invest in heavy curtains to keep the light out. Research has shown that while any type of light stops you feeling sleepy, light that is towards the blue end of the spectrum is especially effective at keeping you awake – think phone screens, computers, tablets... If you do have to use your phone or tablet at night, try turning down the brightness.

Think happy thoughts

A good alternative to counting sheep is the idea of creating happy thoughts. Try creating a wonderful fantasy world in your head or take yourself off to your happy place. Keep your thoughts calm and your happy place relaxing. A study by Allison Harvey showed that people who were told to create relaxing, pleasant thoughts drifted off to sleep in just 20 minutes.

Safe and sound

Knowing that you are sleeping somewhere secure is something that will help you with a good night’s sleep. Secure your doors and windows so you can sleep soundly in the knowledge that you’re safe.

Have a soak in the tub

A warm bath (with a few scented candles dotted around the room) is great for helping to put you in a sleepy state of mind. If you have an en suite then you can simply go from bath to bed to dreamland.
