Award-Winning Garden Moving To South West London Development

Posted 1 June 2023 by Helen Christie

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal Balcony Garden is set to move to St George’s Chelsea Creek development…

WhatHouse? Award-winning developer St George is pleased to announce that the ‘Alight Here’ Balcony Garden by Emma Tipping, sponsored by St George, will be relocated from the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and showcased at Chelsea Cheek, a new development by St George in south west London.

‘Alight Here’ was awarded Gold in its category at this year’s show, and Emma Tipping was the winner of the coveted RHS Young Designer of the Year award in 2022. Emma will also be hosting a free design workshop at the development on 23 June.

Inspired by daily city life and promoting a message of waste reduction with sustainability at the forefront, ‘Alight Here’ is a compact, but characterful balcony-styled space to escape the everyday rush and relax with a morning cup of coffee or an after-work drink. From June, the cleverly creative and ‘super sustainable’ Balcony Garden can be found in its new home for the local community and Chelsea Creek residents to view.

‘Alight Here’ promotes an important message of waste reduction, using repurposed rubbish bins as containers and benches made from reclaimed railway sleepers. The wall tiles, made from recycled Welsh slate, are installed using a silicone adhesive to ensure that they can be removed and reused after the show.

The design workshop with Emma Tipping will be held at Chelsea Creek. Taking place at 11am – 12.30pm on 23 June, the workshop will offer guests an opportunity to learn how to make the most of their outdoor spaces with somewhat surprising materials. Emma will share her knowledge and experience on how to recycle materials and prioritise sustainability in garden design. Those wishing to attend can express interest by emailing [email protected]. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Those participating in the workshop will also be able to view the unique relocated Balcony Garden from the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

'Alight Here' at Chelsea Creek (St George)

Also in celebration of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, St George recently unveiled a contemporary, site-specific floral installation by Booming Haus, a luxury floral studio. The studio is known for its use of ethical and sustainable techniques, and the new permanent installation is now available to view at Chelsea Creek.

Named Grounded Cirrus, the contemporary floral artwork is both harmonious and sustainable. It comprises two weaved beech structures which reach with grace towards the sky and are complemented by intertwining rose bushes. The earthy tones of the beech are stunningly contrasted by the vibrancy of the roses. Inspired by nature, the permanent, organic sculpture will evolve and develop its own seasonality, as the roses come in and out of bloom, and the metalwork within the piece rusts with time.

The floral work by Blooming Haus complements its setting – the tree-lined avenues and waterways of new, prestigious residential development Chelsea Creek. The new neighbourhood is home to a network of meandering canals, designed by architects Squire & Partners, to mirror the waterways of Copenhagen and Amsterdam. It is envisioned that the permanent installation will soon become a habitat for urban wildlife and will contribute to the rich biodiversity at Chelsea Creek. It has been deliberately located close to the water, which houses a nesting place for Moorhens, and also close to a 'bee hotel' garden. Two timber boats have also been anchored close to Grounded Cirrus, which house additional nests to encourage bird nesting and provide a safe haven for birds in the area.
