Moving House? Here’s Why You Should Value Garden Space

Posted 8 February 2021 by Keith Osborne

Outside space is a real priority for many homebuyers these days and there are many reasons for valuing a private garden...

Moving to a new house is both an exciting and daunting prospect in equal measure. After all, the last year has seen many people delay their moving plans due to the coronavirus. Today, others could still be biding their time while under yet another lockdown. On the positive side, you may least have more thinking time to mull over your decisions and truly get to the heart of what you want from a property.

One aspect of the move you should play close attention to is what garden area offers you. These green spaces must never be underestimated, as they can significantly enhance your quality of life.

If you haven’t considered looking for a property with a garden, or if you aren’t quite sure what you want to get out of one, then keep reading after the jump.

An area for family time

If you have kids, then a garden area can give them a safely controlled outdoor environment for them to enjoy.

Depending on the size of your garden, you could fill it with all sorts of things to keep them busy. Trampolines, sandpits, and ping pong tables are just some of the fun additions many folks have in their garden, offering up new and exciting experiences without the need for travel. You can add some excitement with each by holding family-wide competitions too!

There has been growing concern that the children of today spend far more time on their smartphones than interacting with their parents, so if you’re a parent that’s facing a similar dilemma with your own family, a garden area might be just enough to turn things around somewhat. Fill it with things to entertain your children, and your garden can be a communal area where you can all enjoy the outdoors together.

TrampolineAn area for pets to use

Pets love the outdoors, and so a garden area can greatly improve their wellbeing.

They will relieve themselves here instead of indoors when they’re desperate, and rabbits will call the garden home also, as this is typically where their hutches are placed. Ultimately, being surrounded by the all the greenery gives pets ample space to stretch their legs, be comfortable, and enjoy life!

Garden spaces can be great for pets, but it’s important to exercise some caution here if they are to be involved in this area. For example, daffodil bulbs, bluebells, and day lilies are just some of the poisonous plants they shouldn’t go near at all. Conduct your own research for a full list, and that way, you may know what not to plant or which areas to keep your animals away from. Unfortunately, dog thefts predominantly take place in back garden areas [https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-53078401 ]too. Therefore, your pets may well need your supervision in this area, but it’s worth it considering all the fun you and them are likely to have.

An area for more storage

Homeowners can find themselves running out of storage; in fact, this can be a big reason many people move in the first place.

It’s never been easier to turn your garden into a secure place for lots of belongings. For example, you will find a wonderful range of garden storage units from Shedstore.co.uk, including log and bin stores and heavy-duty boxes. You can also find metal and wooden garages that can be quickly easily assembled on your property, stashing away things like motorbikes, bicycles, and practically anything else you might think of. Ultimately, it makes life so much easier when everything has a designated area. One garage or even one shed is often not enough, as all your tools and equipment can simply get clumped together in a tedious mess. While it’s easy to cheat yourself into thinking that being disorganised is part of having a shed or garage, that’s a misconception. Invest in some quality garden storage units, and your garden will be far more efficient and dynamic.

VegetablesAn area for hobbies

Gardening is its own discipline, requiring much knowledge, forethought, and skill to be maintained properly.

Because of this, many people find tending their gardens incredibly therapeutic. This isn’t something that is exclusively reserved for elderly people either, as people of all ages can get stuck in and enjoy themselves. You could do any of the following:

  • Plant new flowers: Exciting colours, wonderful aromas, and fabulous arrangements are always possible.
  • Grow vegetables: It’s not uncommon to erect a greenhouse of sorts, or to just simply grow the odd bit of produce for fun.
  • Watch nature: Some people spread seed over their garden to attract the birds, or set up cameras to view animals like foxes or badgers overnight.
  • Enjoy other hobbies: Lots of people like to undertake non-gardening related pastimes in their garden, such as reading, listening to music, building DIY furniture, or even painting and drawing.

There’s a broad spectrum of things you can do in your garden, a practical space as well as a pretty one! Being surrounded by nature while performing some other everyday pleasures can just make your life a bit more dynamic, especially when you’re under lockdown orders. People are craving the outdoors more than ever, making gardens highly sought after.

An Area That Adds Value

Garden areas add value to your property, and that value can increase depending on what you do with it.

There are many DIY tips and tricks you can undertake in the garden that will affect the price of your home. The Metro note some of the easy DIY garden hacks that add value to a property, including simply mowing the lawn, weeding, and stashing away unsightly equipment (hence the need for quality storage solutions!). It’s common sense, but if everything looks nice, it will appeal more, so it’s unwise to treat your garden as an ‘add-on’ or ‘extra’ when it has such intrinsic value.

Gardens are often a reflection of the property inside too. If it’s messy, then who can say the indoors will be any better? Therefore, the green areas often serve as the first impression for potential buyers and tells people that the property has been greatly looked after through the years. The garden space can be a big indicator on whether a property is right for you, and if you’re moving, whether the property you currently own is worthy of being sold right away. In the end, gardens play a crucial role in the moving process.
