Acorn Property Group and Galliard Homes, developers of Brooks Dye Works, in Bristol’s St Werburghs, are sponsoring a much-loved local event, Picnic in the Park, on Sunday 11 September.

Organised by St Werburghs Community Centre, Picnic in the Park is an annual community celebration with food, stalls, activities and entertainment for all the family at Mina Road Park, taking place between 1.00pm and 5.00pm this Sunday.

The Brooks Dye Works scheme by Acorn, in conjunction with Galliard, is creating a new residential quarter and will open access to the adjacent Mina Road Park. The park is a well-used community space, and the redevelopment of Brooks Dye Works will expand the public area, with improved pedestrian access to the park by reopening routes which had been lost since the 1950s.

Extending from the park will be the new Alfred Brooks Square, named after the founder of the historic dye works. This new public space centres around the landmark 19th-century chimney and wildflower planting area which acts as a flood alleviation bowl to improve the natural eco-system.

Sponsoring the event for the third time, the development partnership’s financial contribution will go towards supporting workshops for children and young people. This will be the first year Picnic in the Park will have an inclusive quieter space at the Community Centre on Horley Road to cater for younger children and children/young adults with additional needs.

Picnic in the Park workshops will include make making your own hat with the Scrapstore, StreetEnvy dance workshops, interactive experiments with We The Curious and Music music Time time for newborns to five-year-olds and their adults with Sophie Loewendahl. There will also be a sensory area which will include Mama & Babymother and baby Yoga yoga (0- two-years-old), Sing & Signsing and sign (0- two-years-old) and Sensory sensory Art art Activity activity for children/young adults.

Robin Squire, regional managing director at Acorn Property Group’s Bristol office, commented: “We are pleased to be able to sponsor Picnic in the Park again, and it is great to see our donation go towards workshops for children and young people. The redevelopment of Brooks Dye Works has brought a previously derelict site back to use and we are pleased to be able to contribute to this fantastic community event.”

George Baffoe-Djan, head of Galliard Western Division, commented: “Brooks Dye Works has opened new pedestrian routes which haven’t been accessed for over 70 years and expanded the access to the park for the local neighbourhood. We are delighted to be able to contribute towards this valued community event.”

Goska Ong, St Werburghs Community Centre director says “This September we are launching new provision for children with special educational needs and disabilities, and their parents. The activities include Yoga for SEND parents on Mondays and SEND Stay & Play for pre-school children on Fridays.

“As ever, St Werburghs Community Association, are grateful for Acorn and Galliard’s support with Picnic in the Park costs. The event plays a vital role in communities coming together, connecting local people with each other and promoting all activities we have on offer. We hope that the new residents at Brooks Dye Works will enjoy the day and visit the Community Centre on their doorstep.”

All homes at Brooks Dye Works are now sold. The scheme is due to be build complete by Autumn 2022, where the new pedestrian routes with access to Mina Road Park will be open for residents and local community.
