Behind The Scenes Of Hackney Wick Show Home

Posted 7 April 2022 by Helen Christie

We’ve taken a look behind the scenes of Telford Homes’ new show apartment in Hackney Wick, designed by Rachel Battais Interiors…

Telford Homes has launched a sophisticated, three-bedroom duplex show apartment, in the heart of vibrant Hackney Wick. Spread over two floors, the light-filled show home provides potential buyers ample, free-flowing living space - ideal for London living.

Designed and dressed by London-based Rachel Battais Interiors, its modern exterior has been expertly married with vintage pieces, encapsulating the rich, industrial history of vibrant Hackney Wick.

WhatHouse? has spoken with Rachel to find out more about the inspiration behind the design and the process of creating the new show home at Stone Studios

How did you approach the project?

“The Lofts show home is the second property that I have designed at Telford Homes’ Stone Studios development. Spread over two floors, the duplex apartment provides a generous spatial environment capturing the potential of free flowing, open-plan living, which is perfect for urban living. Crossing the threshold into the apartment for the first time I was immediately captivated by the dramatic double-height space of the entrance foyer, particularly since it was flooded with natural light from the skylight above. I approached this project knowing that this quality can add a new dimension to the experience of the interior. By incorporating palettes of green, burnt orange and tan colours, I was able to further bring the space to life.”

What was the inspiration behind the interior design?

“The unique, vintage pieces that I chose for the space evoke a variety of emotions and memories for potential buyers. One great example of this are the vintage pieces exhibited on the metal bookshelf  standing tall at the end of the landing; the collection includes an antique tennis racket sourced from Wimbledon. I also wanted to capture the rich, industrial history that lies here, which  influenced my decision to incorporate the steel pendant lighting above the stairs.”

Did the surrounding area of Hackney influence the show home?

“I love the quirkiness and creativity of Hackney Wick - one of the largest creative communities in Europe. I wanted this space to encapsulate the vibrant, eclectic community that exists right on the apartment’s doorstep. An array of beautiful artwork and soft furnishings were locally sourced from passionate craftspeople and artisans, including bespoke upholstered headboards that can be found in the two bedrooms. In the third bedroom that I transformed into an office space, I wanted the creativity of the local area to spill over into the room and this influenced my decision to exhibit retro black and white images that brilliantly capture life in the 1960s and beyond.”

Were there any challenges, and how did you overcome them?

“There is so much you can do with the space, I could let my creativity and imagination run wild. With so many ideas and inspirations, it is hard to pin down just one and execute it in such a small amount of time..  At times, managing such a varied team of people including suppliers and contractors to install the work at the right time  can have its challenges  as we need to ensure it is completed for the handover date. However,  with such a great team all working together, it was a joy to see my vision come to life!

What is your favourite part of the home?

“My favourite element of the home is its unique and unconventional character that future buyers can put their own stamp on. I have enjoyed the journey of designing this space. The open-plan living area offers a breadth of potential uses - whether for entertaining guests or working from home. It is also ideally situated in the heart of Hackney Wick’s diverse, vibrant community that offers residents a host of bustling amenities to take advantage of. It really has something to offer for everyone!”

In addition to a selection of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, the Stone Studios development also  includes over 5,000sqm of high-quality commercial space, of which 3,000sqm has been acquired by Creative Land Trust to offer as affordable workspace to local artists and entrepreneurs. Future residents will also have access to a communal courtyard that is complete with a play area and benches, perfect for socialising with family, friends and neighbours.

Buyers will also enjoy quick and easy access to the vibrant Broadway Market in nearby London Fields, as well as the shopping and entertainment options on offer at Westfield Stratford shopping centre. Nestled between the beautiful Victoria Park and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and conveniently located within close proximity to East London’s canal network and the River Lea, Stone Studios also offers an abundance of stunning green space within a stone’s throw from the development. Enjoy great transport links into central London, with direct public access to Hackney Wick Overground station (zone 2) as well as a 12-hour concierge and secure, purpose-built bicycle storage.
