Luxury Show Home Opens At Landmark St Andrews Residence

Keith OsborneFollowing extensive renovations over 2021, one of Scotland’s most prestigious addresses, Hamilton Grand, has officially unveiled its first ever show apartment, with classic yet contemporary interiors by leading Scottish interior design studio, OCCA Design.
With views stretching across the iconic Old Course onto West Sands Beach and the Fife coastline, the two-bedroom apartment showcases the best of life at this landmark St Andrews residence.
Inspired by the Victorian vernacular of the magnificent 19th-century red-brick property, OCCA Design has created bespoke pieces of furniture to reflect the grand décor of the era, such as tartan and tweed feature fabrics, library sofas, embossed leather chairs and ottomans, as well as pendant lamps. To give a contemporary edge, the colour palette of the rooms is crisp and clean, using taupe and sage paintwork to contrast with dark exposed wood flooring.
We spoke to Kate Mooney, founder of OCCA Design, to learn more about the interior design concept.
How did you decide on the choice of colours and furnishings etc. for each room?
Our design concept for the apartment drew from the colours, textures and landscape surrounding Hamilton Grand in St Andrews, Scotland.
Other influences included the rich history of Scottish textiles, the beautiful, ornate Victorian architecture of the building and the grand décor of that era – layered with a contemporary OCCA twist.
Are there any key trends that you wanted to reflect in the apartment?
Our designs don’t tend to play on trends. On projects like this, we tend to gravitate towards timeless, sustainable concepts that respond to the clients brief while drawing influence from the provenance, architecture and story behind the building and its surroundings.
Are there any ‘hero’ pieces of furniture or bespoke pieces that you had specially created?
Produced by Sofa & Chair Co, the Chesterfield deep button backed sofa is based on an iconic British piece of upholstery, with its flared arms adding a contemporary touch.
How did you make the most of the layout, spec and architectural features of the apartment?
Overlooking the most famous gold course in the world, Hamilton Grand is a building full of rich historical references, with the Kohler renovation of the building introducing more contemporary living spaces and apartments. Subsequently our design looks to subtly fuse the two, to deliver an open-plan kitchen/dining/living space brought together by a striking kitchen island unit, complete with a crisp Carrera marble surface, that connects the three zones.
Did you enjoy designing the apartment and what do you feel is most unique about it compared to other projects?
The Hamilton Grand building is a joy to work on, with its unusual and unique blend of grand, Victorian architecture and contemporary, open plan living spaces.
