Green Mortgage The Right Choice For Warrington Buyer
Posted 31 October 2022 by
Helen ChristieWith housebuyers seeking more energy efficient homes, Mike Sanders, 42, is among those opting for a green mortgage.
Green mortgages provide preferential terms if buyers choose an energy efficient home, and for Mike, a veterinary surgeon, the financial benefits were significant enough to persuade him to opt for a different type of house than he originally planned.
After living in a city centre flat for 11 years, Mike intended to purchase a 1930s style Victorian home, but after comparing the energy efficiency with that of a new build, he had a change of heart.
Mike, who is now preparing to move into Countryside’s Rivers Edge development in Warrington, says: “I’m currently living in Manchester, where I own a flat and I’d started thinking about buying a house about three years ago but it was put on hold due to the pandemic.
“I was considering a 1930s style house but older houses are known for not being energy efficient. I looked at a few developments but when I found Rivers Edge, it was exactly what I was looking for in terms of affordability and location. The houses still have their own character and knowing how much I’ll be able to save on bills with a new build was a key selling point.”

Homeowners can benefit from lower interest rates on their mortgage the more energy efficient a home is. Countryside’s new build properties are 27% more energy efficient than the national average and up to 56% more energy efficient when compared to a Victorian property due to the energy-saving features included as standard.
Mike adds: “I hadn’t considered taking out a green mortgage, but when I found out how energy efficient Countryside homes are, it was recommended to me. With the increasing cost of living, I was worried about taking out a new mortgage and rising interest rates, but with a green mortgage I’ll be on a longer fixed rate which gives me greater peace of mind.”
Mark Hadfield, managing director, Merseyside and Cheshire West, Countryside, says: “Green mortgages have been available for a while, but consumers like Mike are becoming increasingly conscious of increasing interest rates and saving on household bills, whilst reducing their carbon footprint. As a result we are seeing a lot more interest from potential homeowners looking to cut down on energy consumption.
“We’re pleased to be welcoming Mike to our Rivers Edge development. It’s a site that is popular with buyers like Mike looking to relocate from cities as it offers a brilliant balance between commutability and access to green, open space.”
