Stairway to heaven - Homes with stunning staircases

Posted 9 September 2016 by Ben Salisbury

For the majority of homes a staircase is a functional aspect of the property, but not always as these spectacular examples illustrate...

Technology giant Apple recently spent $1m on staircases at its flagship new store in San Francisco, including spending $50,000 on just one important step, ‘stair number six’, which acts as a guard rail.

Lovely as the undoubtedly are, for most people staircases are a functional part of the home, separating one floor from another and providing a link to different parts of the home.

However, staircases, like all other design features of a home, come in all shapes and sizes and can be a spectacular addition to a home.

From intricate hand-carved wooden designs to wrought-iron balusters, staircases don’t have to follow one design or format. They can be as individual as you want them to be and are often designed to complement the style of the property.

Twinned with high ceilings and framed by impressive entrance halls, staircases can become a feature that sets a property apart from even the most superb designs.

WhatHouse? presents some of the latest and best home designs that incorporate staircases in fantastic ways. Each of the homes featured have been nominated for the WhatHouse? Awards 2016.
