Property Match of the Day – Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur preview

Posted 3 August 2015 by Keith Osborne

If you were a top professional sportsman earning thousands of pounds a week, where would you choose to live? That's what the Whathouse.com team asked themselves ahead of the opening weekend of the 2015/15 Premier League season, where one of the top matches is Man Utd against Spurs, and we’ve come up with some marvellous brand new homes that would fit the bill.

This summer, Manchester United have made a number of key signings already. The most surprising was perhaps Bastian Schweinsteiger: the German international has arrived from Bayern Munich for £15million and is reported to be on £200,000 a week. No doubt he’ll be looking for somewhere comfortable for himself and model girlfriend Sarah Brandner. Memphis Depay has joined the club from PSV in Holland and can afford an exceptional new home on his £100,000-per-week salary. On about the same money is Morgan Schneiderlin, who’s come up from Southampton.

Spurs have not signed any cheques quite as big as United’s, but they have their own new internationals, such as the Belgian Toby Alderweireld, who’s come from Atletico Madrid, and the Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer, a signing from Cologne. While these players might command between £40,000 and £70,000 a week, even the £5million signing from MK Dons, Delle Ali, can still nab a substantial new build home on his more modest weekly wage of £25,000.

Here are the new homes selections we have made to entice these new players...

For the Manchester Utd team...

Thornfield Heights, Alderley Edge, Cheshire (Huntsmere) - £3.5million

Thornfield HeightsThe village of Alderley Edge, around half-an-hour’s drive from central Manchester, has long been the ‘go-to’ destination for the city’s footballers. The Beckhams used to live there, and other past and present residents include Rio Ferdinand and Dwight Yorke. It’s also been popular with some of the stars of Coronation Street.

Thornfield Heights will be a new three-storey house of approximately 7,000 sq ft located on the lower end of Macclesfield Road - a prime, south-facing plot of just under half-an-acre. The house is set behind automated gates and has five bedroom suites, four reception rooms, a pool and gym.

Camps Mount, Prestbury, Cheshire (Jackson-Stops & Staff) – £2.65million

Camps MountPrestbury forms one part of the Cheshire’s ‘Golden Triangle’, along with Alderley Edge and Wilmslow, so this brand new mansion is perfectly located for the top players to be close to both work and their team-mates’ homes.

The leisure complex of this home will be a big attraction for a top football player, with a pool, gym, changing room, sauna and a six-person Jacuzzi. There are six bedrooms (four en suite), various reception rooms, a triple garage and a generous plot of mature landscaped grounds and of course, the house is fitted with the latest gadgetry and home technology from top to bottom.

For the Spurs team...

St Joseph’s Gate, Mill Hill, London (Berkeley Homes) – £1.75million

St Joseph's GateThe magnificent Grade II listed building which forms the centrepiece of this development is perhaps a little more traditional than some of the contemporary new homes that attract young Premier League players, but the penthouse here certainly ticks all the style and sophistication boxes they might expect.

The third floor home has a top-notch specification and with a gated entrance and seven acres of grounds, provides the seclusion and security that many of these stars crave. It’s also just half an hour from White Hart Lane and there’s a concierge to look after things while the owner’s on all those away trips.

High Road, Essendon, Hertfordshire (Octagon) - £POA

High RoadIn the South East of England, Octagon is one of the most high-profile names in exceptional luxury homes, having won many awards for the mansions they have built around the Homes Counties over the years.

This substantial home is just over 20 minutes (maybe less in a Bentley Continental) from the Spurs training ground and is set in 1.7 acres of mature landscaped grounds. Past the electric gates is a spectacular 200m tree-lined drive, and behind the front door lie five reception rooms, five bedrooms and five bathrooms. The master bedroom suite really impresses, with a private terrace overlooking the landscaped, south-facing grounds.
