This Is The Mews: Special House Types With Great Appeal

We look at some brand new mews houses, a now fashionable type of property with roots in the days of horse and carriage...

The original mews homes come from an era when motor travel was many years from discovery, let alone widespread use; an age where the horse ruled street transport.

The mews were set in a street or courtyard off a main road behind some of the grander mansions, townhouses and villas of a town or city. They combined stables with accommodation for those who looked after the horses and carriages. As cars took over, stables were often replaced by garages and these days, that space is more often than not converted into living space and residents encouraged to go car-free as much as possible.

Dexters is currently marketing Kings Mews, a boutique scheme of five homes set in a mews house in the heart of Bloomsbury, central London, within walking distance of the likes of Gray’s Inn Road, Lincoln’s Inn Fields and a handful of Tube stations. There’s a selection of one-, two- and three-bedroom properties to satisfy a range of requirements and budgets. Prices currently range from £1.125million to £6.5million.

Wilndernesse HouseWildernesse House

PegasusLife is a specialist in high-end, age-exclusive homes and at its development at the Wildernesse Estate, on the eastern fringe of Sevenoaks, Kent, it has complemented the apartments in the beautiful period conversion of Grade II listed, Georgian Wildernesse House with a collection of new build, two-bedroom mews houses. On the site of an old stable block, these contemporary homes are set over two and three storeys and priced from £610,000. The Walled MewsThe Walled Mews

Martyn Gerrard Estate Agents is inviting house-hunters to gated The Walled Mews in Southgate, north London, a pair of two-storey mews houses with off-street parking. Each offers 1,741sqft of living space. Off the hallway is the lounge, then at the rear a large kitchen/dining/family room with extensive glazing out to the terrace and garden. Upstairs are three double bedrooms – with an en suite, walk-in wardrobe and private terrace for the master – another room that found suit a singe bed or be used as a home office, and there’s a family bathroom. Prices start at £999,950.

Fruit MarketFruit Market

Fruit Market is a development in the Old Town of Hull where Beal Homes is building two- and three-storey mews-style homes within private courtyards. Elements such as materials, details, colours, scale and shapes have been based on traditional buildings from the area, while buyers have the option of altering layouts to create their own bespoke interior with personal touches to such as kitchen design, choice of fixtures and fittings, and tiling. Two-bedroom homes start at £249,995 and three-bedroom homes from £259,995.

Chestnut GrangeChestnut Grange

Jones Homes has released the last phase of two-bedroom mews homes which are available under a special purchase scheme at Chestnut Grange, located off the High Street in the Cheshire village of Tarporley. The ‘Handforth’ and ‘Howarth A’ types are available for £213,500 and £220,500, which are 70% of £305,000 and £315,000 respectively, using a discount scheme (subject to terms and conditions).

Bourke CloseBourke Close

Plot 1 is priced £750,000 at Bourke Close in Parkside Place, Clapham, with enquiries through Dexters. This is a collection of contemporary-designed, high-specification mews houses which come with an open-plan kitchen/dining/living room the full length of the ground floor, a separate utility space, three bedrooms (one en suite) and a family bathroom their own private outdoor space. It’s under a mile from many shops and several rail/Tube stations.

Forde MewsForde Mews

Agent Goadsby is marketing Forde Mews in Fordingbridge, Hampshire for local developer Beechvale. Right now, buyers can snap up one of the two-bedroom houses for £235,000. It comes with a fully fitted kitchen with integrated appliances, contemporary bathroom, downstairs WC and a sitting room with French doors to the rear. This home is completed and ready to move into.

Groom Place

Groom Place is a quiet mews connecting Chester Street and Chapel Street in Belgravia. Prime Central London estate agents, Russell Simpson has a three-bedroom property on the books priced £4.95 million. It has been completely rebuilt inside and is now ready to move into. It is laid out across four floors, with the first floor solely dedicated to the master bedroom, dressing room and luxurious en suite.

New AvenueNew Avenue

Countryside has a collection of 11 mews homes at New Avenue, its regeneration scheme in Oakwood, north London, one of which has been fitted out in full as a show house. These homes form a grand crescent around a central garden, complete with a play area, which underlines a ‘green’ approach to the whole development. The area has a number of ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ rated schools. Each of these mews homes has three bedrooms (with en suite and fitted wardrobes to the master) and a private garden, and prices start from just £675,000.

Pilgrim LanePilgrim Lane

Latchmere Properties has four mews houses among the new properties for sale at Pilgrim Lane in much-loved, well-connected Dorking, on the edge of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural. The development is under half-a-mile from the town centre and mainline station, and only three minutes on foot from Dorking West station, and only a short drive from the M25. No.5 and No.6 are both four-bedroom mews homes with parking and private garden, and they are priced £725,000 and £699,950 respectively.

Kensington ForestKensington Forest

In Barnoldswick, Lancashire, around 30 miles from Leeds and Manchester and on the doorstep of some of England’s most treasured countryside, Berkeley DeVeer has mews-style ‘Elgar’ house types for sale at its Kensington Forest development, priced from £189,995 to £194,995. These are set out over three storeys, with the lounge and kitchen/dining room on the ground floor, two bedrooms and the en suite master bedroom on the top floor.
