Location Of The Day: Leeds, West Yorkshire

Posted 24 January 2023 by Keith Osborne

Leeds is one of Yorkshire’s most dynamic cities and could be the perfect place to consider buying a brand new home...

Leeds is one of the UK’s largest cities and the diverse lifestyles that it supports makes it a popular place to live for people of different ages and cultures. The city centre and suburbs offer new homes to suit many budgets and requirements.

Leeds was given the status of a city in the late 19th century following more than a century of rapid growth as it changed from a market town to one of Britain’s major industrial centres across a range of sectors. These days, the mills and ironworks have been replaced by national and international companies in finance, retail, digital and retail, among many others. The likes of Asda, Channel 4, Yorkshire Building Society and William Hill are just a few of the names illustrating the variety of roles that make it a popular place to call home for the employment opportunities it offers.

It's geographical location make it very well served my major roads and one of the UK’s busiest railway stations. There’s an airport just eight miles from the city centre.

With five universities and a host of highly regarded schools and colleges across a number of disciplines, it has a high proportion of younger people in the wider metropolitan area of some 800,000. The exceptional range of cultural, sport and entertainment venues caters for everyone, and the city centre is renowned for its mix of premium brands and independent stores. There are festivals and other events across the annual calendar that draw huge audiences from across the city and beyond.

For house-hunters considering buying a brand new home in Leeds, there are right now a host of options to consider.

The ‘Barcelona’ at KudosThe ‘Barcelona’ at Kudos

Strata is one of the very busy developers in and around the city and one of its current projects is called Kudos, a collection of apartments in the eastern suburb of Killingbeck, with shopping, green space and good transport links close by. When completed, this development will comprise 252 contemporary two-, three- and four-bedroom homes. Right now, prices here start at just £205,000 for the ‘Livorno’, which is a three-storey house with bedroom/home office on the ground floor, open-plan kitchen/living room on the first floor and a spacious en suite bedroom on the top floor. And alternative, from £310,000, is the ‘Barcelona’, also set over three floors. The top floor of this on is also dedicated to the principal bedroom, with two more double bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor, and kitchen/dining room, cloakroom and dual-aspect lounge on the ground floor.

Strata is also building not far away at Identity, with 116 similarly modern-design properties with two, three or four bedrooms. The ‘Rosas’, from £280,000, has a kitchen at the front, a lounge/diner at the rear (with sliding doors to the garden); two double bedrooms, single bedroom and bathroom on the first floor; and spacious double bedroom with en suite on the top floor.

Just a short drive from Cross Gates railway station and the M1, Destination 17 is another Strata development in the east of the city, comprising 194 two-, three- and four-bedroom homes with two- and three-storey house types currently starting from £220,000. The ‘Madrid’ is a four-bedroom property with kitchen/dining room, lounge, four double bedrooms (one en suite) and a family bathroom. The ‘Bologna’ is a double-fronted house from £420,000. On the ground floor are the dual-aspect living room and kitchen/dining room, off which are the utility room, cloakroom and private garden. Two double bedrooms, two single bedrooms and the family bathroom are upstairs.

The ‘Fewston’The ‘Fewston’ at Elysian Fields

Adel is a village on the northern outskirts of the city and it’s where David Wilson Homes is well underway at Elysian Fields, a development of two- to five-bedroom homes across a range of attractive house types. Residents benefit from being just 20 minutes away from both the city centre and the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Golf fans will find a few courses within easy reach of home here. The housebuilder’s own Home of the Week is the two-bedroom ‘Timble’ which comes with a major deal with upgraded kitchen, free flooring and a deposit contribution of £16,500. For an executive family home, the ‘Fewston’ is currently top-of-the-range and starts from £839,995. This substantial detached home has separate living room, dining room and study, and two of its five bedrooms come with an en suite. Outside are the double garage and private driveway. Buyers can ask about a range of offers on this house type.

Vision at Meanwood comes from national housebuilder Taylor Wimpey and has plenty of local amenities, and is within easy reach of Headingley’s campus of Leeds Beckett University and the city centre. Prices range from £187,995 to £379,995 for the current selection of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes. The range starts with a two-bedroom ground floor apartment, up to a house called ‘The Lydford’, with 1,099 sq ft of living space across kitchen/dining room, lounge, four bedrooms (one en suite) and a family bathroom.

Another busy developer is Keepmoat Homes. Its development called Timeless is another collection of homes in Killingbeck, with two-, three- and four-bedroom options priced from £199,995 and a whole range of coach house, terraced, semi-detached, detached designs. Buyers can ask about the Deposit Unlock scheme (which requires a deposit of only 5%) and, for those with a property to sell, Easymove. Selected plots currently come with the offer of up to £800 per month mortgage contribution for 12 months. For the near future, prices have yet to be released but buyers are invited to register their interest in Synergy in Temple Newsam, where Keepmoat will be building two- and three-bedroom detached and semi-detached houses.
