With Armed Forces Day coming up on Saturday 26 June, we take a look at a few developments in London and the South East which are taking shape on former military sites, creating thousands of brand new homes.
Millbrook Park, Mill Hill, London (Barratt London)
Millbrook Park is built on the former Inglis Army Barracks site, which was in use from 1905 until 2007. Located in a popular part of north London, it will comprise one- two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, including 345 new apartments and 10 new houses. Also in Aldershot, Weston Homes is transforming the former Grade II listed Cambridge Military Hospital into a collection of homes set in 12 acres of grounds and forming part of The Wellesley Estate. The Italianate neo-classical building will accommodate properties, including one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and a penthouse incorporating the building’s clock tower. In addition, there will be brand new two-, three- and four-bedroom houses.
The Wellesley Estate covers 370.7 acres (150 hectares) and provides homes, community and leisure facilities, two primary schools, a neighbourhood centre, and the Wellesley Woodlands, offering 271 acres (110 hectares) of natural green open space. Kitchener Barracks, Chatham, Kent (TopHat)
Housebuilder TopHat is building a range of properties Kitchener Barracks, dating from 1757 and named after Earl Kitchener in 1928, was most recently used as accommodation for the Royal School of Military Engineering. It will mix updated and refurbished heritage buildings and complement them with contemporary-design two- and three-storey houses. A plan has been submitted to add a collection of modular apartments to this, of which 25% would be affordable homes.
There’s currently a range of two-, three-, four- and five-bedroom houses for sale, priced from £320,000, £420,000, £495,000 and £550,000 respectively. Chatham is part of the historic and scenic Medway area, which has seen a major regeneration in recent years, providing thousands of new homes served by a host of retail and leisure options and amenities.
