Coastal Towns and Villages in South Wales
Posted 27 February 2018 by
Helen ChristieKnown for rugged coastline, impressive country parks and its Celtic culture, South Wales is the most heavily populated part of Wales. South Wales lies just west of the Bristol Channel, and is where the capital of Wales, Cardiff, is located.
The region isn’t definitive, but typically is seen to include Cardiff, Swansea and Newport, and the historic counties of Monmouthshire and Glamorgan.
The University of South Wales has campuses in Newport, Cardiff and Pontypridd. The average house price in Cardiff is just over £242,000, which is only slightly above the UK average of £226,000. South Wales is also home to many beaches, and we have taken a look at some of the most charming coastal towns and villages in South Wales, ideal for homebuyers wanting to move to the area, but wanting somewhere quieter than the busy, vibrant cities.
Here are some beautiful coastal towns and villages in South Wales...
St Brides Major
Located just to the south-west of Bridgend is St Brides Major. St Brides Major has a church, St Bridget, two pubs and a primary school. Within the community lies Southerndown, which is known for its beach, Dunraven bay (or Bae Dwnrhefn in Welsh) which is a designated Heritage Coast, and very popular with tourists, particularly during the summer months. The beach has been featured several times in the BBC’s Doctor Who. There are regular buses to nearby Bridgend, which has a train station, with fast, direct trains to Cardiff.
Ogmore-by-Sea
Also in the community of St Brides Major is Ogmore-by-Sea, a seaside village. Geologically, it is an interesting place that is often missed by tourists. Waterstone Homes has developed 12 new family homes in the village, with stunning views over the Welsh coast, and David Wilson Homes has also built new homes in the village.
Rhoose
Rhoose is one of the fastest growing villages in the Vale of Glamorgan. It is the home of Cardiff Airport, and it is served by a train station, Rhoose Cardiff International Airport, that has direct trains to Cardiff and Barry. There have been several large new home developments over the last few years, including The Hollies and Rhoose Point. The village has two pubs, some shops, a library and a holiday park. There are also good local schools, as well as a charming pebbly beach and striking cliffs.

The BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey was filmed in many areas of Barry and Barry Island, which is home to Barry island Pleasure Park. The average house price in Barry is around £175,000, considerably lower than the UK average.
