Luxurious Apartments Launched To Market In Edinburgh

Posted 25 February 2022 by Helen Christie

The final twenty luxurious apartments within Playfair at Donaldson's in Edinburgh city centre are now being launched to the market…

With its majestic character and architectural heritage, this Category A listed former school, designed by renowned architect William Playfair, has long been recognised as one of the most important landmark buildings in Scotland’s capital.

Sensitively converted by award-winning renovation specialist City and Country, Playfair now offers luxurious living in16 glorious acres, just a mile from Princess Street.

The twenty apartments that constitute this final phase are being launched to the market by Savills, and include one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, as well as a chic studio and stunning penthouse. They come with panoramic views across sweeping lawns, topiary gardens and a historic courtyard, and beyond to the rolling Pentland Hills. Their contemporary interiors provide a striking contrast to the building's palatial exterior, offering impressive proportions, sleek design and an abundance of natural light through iconic period windows.

Residents have exclusive access to The Playfair's concierge service and several communal spaces, including the boutique Club Room and Chapel Room, as well as the internal courtyard. There is also secure underground parking, including charging for electric vehicles, and a total of 16 acres of parkland.

Savills Ben Di Rollo says: “It’s an absolute privilege to work with City and Country on such an historic property: when it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1850, she was reputed to say it was more impressive than some of her own palaces!

“The final phase represents a rare opportunity to own a home in one of Edinburgh’s most important buildings, both historically and architecturally. It has been painstakingly renovated by City and Country’s in-house conservation experts, who are passionate about viably conserving and restoring Britain’s architectural heritage.  Exceptional design and build standards have been artfully deployed at Playfair, without compromising its splendid period features or the expansive green space that surrounds it. This means this very special place can be enjoyed and cherished by generations to come.

“The views from the penthouse are breathtaking and its location is hard to beat. While the rolling Pentland Hills look like they are within touching distance from the penthouse, it is just a 15-minute walk to Princes Street, one of the most famous shopping parades in the UK.”

William Playfair was also responsible for some of Edinburgh’s famous landmark neoclassical-style buildings, including the National Galleries and the Royal Scottish Academy and the City Observatory on Calton Hill.

Prices at the development range from from £560,000 to £1,525,000.
