Launch Of New Zero Carbon Homes In Engine Common

Posted 28 November 2023 by Keith Osborne

The first of 84 ultra-energy-efficient new homes have been released for sale at Great Oaks by Newland Homes...

The first zero carbon homes have been unveiled to the public by WhatHouse? Award-winning housebuilder Newland Homes at its new development in Engine Common, called Great Oaks.

There are 84 three- and four-bedroom homes – including three detached bungalows – being constructed just off North Road, complete with high levels of insulation, solar panels for electricity generation, air source heat pumps for hot water and heating, and electric car charging points. There will be 29 affordable homes for Shared Ownership or social rent here.

Newland Homes has commissioned a one-of-a-kind piece of public art in the heart of the development to commemorate the location’s industrial past. Called ‘The Great Beam’, the artwork is made from reclaimed timber and references the beam engine that once operated on an adjacent piece of land. Artist Adam Blencowe designed the piece to celebrate the industrious people that first came to live at Engine Common, whilst also providing public seating for its newest residents.

The highly efficient homes at Great Oaks will be equipped with the latest technology to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, providing a cleaner and greener alternative to homeowners and transforming the way homes are designed and run.

These new properties achieve an ‘A’ rating for both energy efficiency and environmental impact, far surpassing the UK’s current building regulations. Indeed, some of the homes at Great Oaks achieve scores above the top possible rating.

These zero carbon homes are powerhouses in their own right; generating as much prime energy as they need from the solar panels and air source heat pump. They are extremely cost effective to run, with homeowners at a previous Newland Homes development reporting running costs of less than £4 a week for a four-bedroom, detached, zero carbon home over the summer months (plus obligatory standing charges).

Continuing the environmentally friendly approach, allotments will also be created for people to grow their own produce at Great Oaks and a natural play area will be created adjacent to an area of open space for all to enjoy.

Marcus Evans, sales & marketing director for Newland Homes, commented: “We have a long and established connection with Engine Common and the surrounding area, and we’re pleased to be returning with our innovative zero carbon homes, which have been widely heralded as the future for housing thanks to their use of renewable energy.”

The show home is due to open on site in the early part of next year. It is anticipated that the first zero carbon homes will be ready for occupation mid next year. In addition to Great Oaks, Newland Homes has seven further developments underway in the South West, providing nearly 300 zero carbon new homes in the near future.

Prices at Great Oaks start from £415,000 for a three-bedroom, semi-detached home. Tailor-made appointments are available daily. Find out more about current Newland Homes developments.
