Show House And Public Art Strategy Unveiled In Cambridge

Posted 21 September 2020 by Keith Osborne

There's a brand new three-floor, five-bedroom show home to see at the Marleigh development in Cambridge...

A new show home has been unveiled at Marleigh, a new community being created on the eastern fringe of Cambridge, together with an iconic new public art strategy.

The spacious new three-storey, five-bedroom show house is one of a number of large executive homes sympathetically designed to reflect the artisan brick cottages and villas so frequently found throughout Cambridge, and they are located in landscaped surroundings.

On the ground floor, a stylish kitchen and dining room with energy-efficient kitchen appliances takes centre stage, opening out onto a private garden. A separate living room provides an ideal entertaining space, while the spacious principal bedroom on the second floor offers both a contemporary en suite bathroom and a built-in wardrobe. A fifth upstairs room can be easily configured to provide a home office. All homes benefit from photovoltaic panels and electric car charging points, helping residents to reduce energy bills and lead a more sustainable lifestyle. The new homes will all offer a double garage, with space to store both cars and family bikes.

Situated less than a 20-minute cycle from Cambridge city centre, Marleigh is a partnership between two developers, Hill and Marshall, designed by architects Pollard Thomas Edwards. It will provide up to 1,300 new homes and a wealth of community facilities. This includes a hub that will host a community centre, café, office space for local businesses and a 52-place nursery, as well as a new 400-place primary school. This will lie in the heart of the market square, which will play host to regular inclusive community events. Allotments will also be available for residents to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

In Marleigh’s grounds, a striking public art strategy has been unveiled with iconic artworks designed and created by celebrated artist, Matthew Lane Sanderson, to reflect the area’s rich aeronautical and engineering history.

The first features have been installed; the dramatic ‘Torus’ sculpture inspired by the jet engine, as well as a prototype of his bicycle rack hoop sculptures. Six large graphic art panels and aero and motor engineering-inspired seating will also be installed at Marleigh in the future, enhancing the environment further and creating eye-catching features for all to enjoy.

Rebecca Littler, group sales and marketing director, commented: “We’re incredibly proud of what we’re creating at Marleigh, with high quality homes which are offset by excellent facilities and beautiful outside spaces adorned with considered artworks which reflect the area’s rich heritage. Our five-bedroom houses are elegant and functional with spaces that can be arranged to offer a busy household the home that they need, from entertainment and socialising spaces, home offices and places to relax and unwind.”

Matthew Lane Sanderson, lead artist at Marleigh, explained: “Public art plays an enormous role in not just decorating a space, but getting people to engage with it. People want to be proud of where they live, and our art strategy is all about creating that sense of pride and belonging. The area has this incredibly rich engineering history and it’s something we want to celebrate.”

Once complete, Marleigh will boast a range of properties including one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and two-, three-, four- and five-bedroom houses, and is the first step towards the transformation of this eastern corner of Cambridge; one that will see much change in the future with plans to move and re-develop the airport area into a new community.

Prices at Marleigh start from £264,950 for an apartment, £424,950 for a two-bedroom coach house and £639,950 for a four-/five-bedroom house. A selection of homes are available with Help to Buy.
