Topping Out Milestone For Popular York Housing Development
Construction of The Chocolate Works on the edge of York city centre has reached a major milestone, with a ‘topping out’ ceremony involving partners Barratt Developments Yorkshire East and charitable housing association, Yorkshire Housing marking the final brick being laid at Orange House, a new collection of affordable homes.
The new collection of 33 affordable apartments will be available to those with the greatest housing needs in the city early in 2022. They are in addition to the 34 affordable homes already built by the WhatHouse? Award-winning housebuilder available on either an affordable rent or Shared Ownership basis.
Located adjacent to York Knavesmire on the edge of the city centre, The Chocolate Works is in an ideal location near York Racecourse, Rowntrees Park and within walking distance of the famous Bishopthorpe Road - also known locally as the ‘Notting Hill of the North’.
Daniel Smith, managing director of Barratt Developments Yorkshire East, commented: “The topping out of Orange House is an important milestone for both The Chocolate Works development and our partnership with Yorkshire Housing. By working together closely, we’re able to bring some much needed affordable housing to the area, which will make a really positive difference to people’s lives.”
Barratt’s David Wilson Homes has already sold over 90% open market properties at the landmark development but there are still one- and two-bedroom homes available, with prices ranging from £250,000 to £393,000.
Thistle House
One notable home is Plot 274, a two-bedroom ground-floor apartment in Thistle House which has just been reduced from £340,000 to £330,000. It also comes with upgrades of quartz worktops and flooring worth £12,000. Large windows bring lots of natural light to this corner plot, which has a fitted, open-plan kitchen/living room with sliding doors to the private terrace. Both bedrooms are generous doubles. Bedroom one comes with an en suite shower room, and there’s also a family bathroom.
This home can be purchased through the Deposit Unlock scheme, devised in collaboration with lenders and the housebuilding industry. It enables first-time buyers and existing homeowners to purchase a new-build home with a 5% deposit (terms and conditions apply) while providing a competitively priced mortgage. The scheme is exclusively available on selected new build homes up to £330,000.
‘Goddard’ house type (centre)
The ‘Goddard’ is an alternative property type, with Plot 134 and example which was £400,000 but is now £350,000. It’s a two-bedroom home with open-plan kitchen, lounge and dining space that lead on to two balconies. Both bedrooms are doubles and there’s a family bathroom and plenty of storage. There are bonuses here too – a Deposit Boost provides £10,000 towards the purchase and this plot comes with a range of upgrades to the kitchen, bathroom and lighting.
