Student Helps Design New Show Home Launched In Kent
David Wilson Homes has unveiled its first two show homes at Applegate Park in Borden, Kent, with one of them including a bedroom designed by Sittingbourne student, Archie Trowell.
KS3 Students at Swale Academy Trust were tasked with creating their dream room on a mood board as part of their Design & Technology curriculum, with interior designer Andrew Henry choosing the winning design and implementing it at Applegate Park. Archie’s design included a calm grey palette throughout the walls, carpets and furniture. Other details were a desk for studying, a bean bag for relaxing, and plants for tranquillity, capturing all things needed for a pre-teen to unwind.
Both show homes are designed to appeal to young professional couples and families. The ‘Holden’ house type, which included Archie’s bedroom design, is best suited to growing and established family dynamics. There is a plethora of family spaces on the bottom floor, which is the heart of the home, with a sociable kitchen and dining room to the rear, a separate lounge and study to the front, and a utility room and cupboard for storage solutions. The top floor has four spacious bedrooms (one with en suite), with one bedroom offering the opportunity for a work from home space or storage room.
The ‘Bradgate’, another four-bedroom house, incorporates contemporary design features which reflect modern needs. Split over two levels, the show home has been designed to maximise and create separate living zones featuring an open-plan kitchen and dining room, with a study and lounge to the front of the property, and four comfortable bedrooms to the top, with an en suite to the main bedroom. This show home would perfectly appeal to those looking for more space or with a growing family.

Archie Trowell commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed seeing my design come to life. When we first received the brief in our Design & Technology lesson, I did not envisage that it would turn into something real in front of my eyes and for hundreds of people to see in a show home! It has made me realise that I have a keen eye for creativity, and it makes me really happy to know that my design was chosen by an experienced interior designer and I was given a fantastic opportunity.”
Andrew Henry, director at Andrew Henry Interiors comments: “It is always a joy to design show homes for David Wilson Kent, however creating the ‘Holden’ has been extra special due to the inclusion of Archie’s bedroom design. All the designs from Swale Academy Trust were fantastic, but Archie’s just stood out to us from the start. We felt it had real thought and consideration throughout, and we loved the detailed narrative description behind it to show how all the elements would come together to create the perfect space for a pre-teen. It is fantastic to be able to showcase to the younger generation that their subjects in school, such as Design & Technology, can lead to a careers like interior design – and a number of students definitely have an eye for it!”
Natalie Perry, sales and marketing director for David Wilson Kent, commented: “Our homes at Applegate Park have all been designed with family living in mind, and the new ‘Holden’ and ‘Bradgate’ show homes represent this ideal perfectly.
“The wider Sittingbourne area is a fantastic place to live, set on the edge of The Swale channel, and with the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the south. While coast and country are never too far away, residents can also enjoy the comforts of the shops and restaurant amenities at their fingertips, thanks to a recent period of investment and regeneration in the town.”
Currently available at Applegate Park is a collection of three- and four-bedroom houses, with prices starting from £449,995. Find out more from David Wilson Homes.
