First Buyer Under Housebuilder’s New Education Worker Scheme

Posted 29 April 2022 by Keith Osborne

Matthew is a teacher and the first homebuyer to benefit from Barratt Developments' new Education Workers Scheme...

Barratt Developments Yorkshire East is supporting education workers who play an integral role in their communities, by donating a contribution for every sale to the new home owner’s nursery, school, college or university, as well as contributing to the customer’s overall deposit, as experienced for the first time by local maths teacher, Matthew Stubbings.

The Education Workers Scheme, which is being piloted in Yorkshire, grants buyers who work at a nursery, school, college or university a £750 deposit contribution for every £25,000 they spend on their home up to £15,000. With every purchase using the scheme, Barratt Developments will also donate £200 to the purchaser's place of employment.

Matthew, a maths teacher at Driffield School and Sixth Form, is the first customer to have taken advantage of the scheme whilst purchasing a new home at Barratt Homes’ Mortimer Park development in Driffield. He recently moved into the area after relocating from Market Weighton, to be closer to his place of work. He chose to purchase a new home with Barratt Developments not only for their reputation, but also for the opportunity to receive support for himself and the school through the Education Workers Scheme.

Matthew commented: “I think the scheme is a brilliant idea, as I’m now able to put the money I’ve saved to other uses, whilst also supporting the school I work in. I chose the ‘Ellerton’ house type because it was a three-bedroom semi-detached property in an attractive cul-de-sac, which allows enough space for everything I want right now, whilst also being big enough for a family in the future. As it's a new build, it comes with the 10-year warranty, which is an option that I wouldn’t have had on a house that had been pre-owned. Also, it is really encouraging to see the local housebuilder support local schools in the area too, which will make a huge difference to our facilities.”

The introduction of the scheme gives something back to professionals across the region working in the education sector who have faced challenging times, in which they have had to adapt quickly to home-based learning, closures and the challenges associated with remote teaching.

Paul Hogan, sales director at Barratt Developments Yorkshire East, said: “We’re really proud of this scheme being piloted across our region, as the teachers, tutors, lecturers and support staff continue to do a brilliant job and we want to thank them in the form of some extra support for those who might be looking to buy a new home.

“We’re so pleased that Matthew has benefitted from the scheme, and as our first customer to do so. We look forward to continuing to support education employees and their institutions in stepping on, or moving up, the property ladder during financially difficult times. We encourage anybody who may be interested in taking advantage of the scheme to get in touch with one of our sales advisors to find out more information on how to apply.”

The scheme has been rolled out at several Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire developments:
