Buckinghamshire Developer Recruits ‘Building Buddies’

Posted 30 December 2020 by Keith Osborne

Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes are offering local schoolchildren special awards at Kingsbrook in Aylesbury Vale...

Barratt and David Wilson Homes is engaging local school pupils in the construction process with its specially designed award programme at its Kingsbrook development in Aylesbury.

Now in its third year, the developer’s Building Buddies Award aims to get children interested in the industry and raise awareness of the variety of roles available in construction.

The award scheme is being hosted at Broughton Community Infant School, located near the housebuilder’s Kingsbrook development and will run throughout the academic year. It is broken down into four quarters and will teach young children about planning and land, technical and design, RSPB, and construction.

There will be a chance for them to enter various design and literature competitions for which the winners will be given their very own awards. Within the activities, pupils will get the chance to name their own development and create a logo, as well as visiting a live site and learning about site safety. They can also design a bird box and create park artwork.

In addition to this, the school will receive a coveted Building Buddies Award which will be presented to them at the end of the academic year.

Karly Williams, sales director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North Thames, said: “Engaging people in the construction industry is at the forefront of our minds and we are delighted to be running this award scheme with Broughton Community Infant School’s pupils.

“Getting young children involved and interested in construction is extremely important to us, as we want to start inspiring the next generation of builders and tradespeople. We know from experience at our developments that young children are fascinated by diggers and other construction machinery and this is something we always try to encourage.

“We look forward to working closely with a local primary school over the next academic year and seeing what creations they can come up with in each of our competitions.”

Construction has now begun on the brand new Kingsbrook View Primary Academy. It will be ready to welcome children at the start of September 2021 and will be run by Inspiring Futures Partnership Trust, a Buckinghamshire-based multi-academy trust. It will be a two-form entry free school with 420 places for primary aged children along with a 52-place nursery. A second primary school and a secondary school are planned for development further down the line.

The school will benefit from a multi-use games area (MUGA), hard and soft play areas, a wildlife area and a forest school curriculum. The main hall and external sports facilities will also be available for hire, to benefit the local community. The academy development will include a new car park with electric charging points, bicycle and scooter storage for use by pupils and staff.

Jon Mason, executive principal of Inspiring Futures Partnership Trust explained that “Kingsbrook View Primary Academy will utilise the educational experience and expertise of Inspiring Futures Partnership Trust to ensure its children experience an outstanding primary education; underpinned by its motto Growing together to achieve dreams.”

Simon Francis, managing director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North Thames, said: “We are working very closely with Buckinghamshire Council to bring these exciting amenities to our community in time for the beginning of the school year in 2021. Kingsbrook has established itself as a vibrant community, with a brand new Parish Council leading the way in community cohesion. With local schools, nurseries, community amenities, a dedicated bus route and a 250-acre Nature Reserve in the early planning stages, Kingsbrook is shaping up to be so much more than a housing development.”
