Five Reasons Why You Should Live In… Oxted

Posted 30 October 2020 by Keith Osborne

Developer St William looks at the many benefits of life in the characterful 'hidden gem' Surrey town...

Over the last seven months, many people have had more time and opportunity to reassess what’s important in their homes. It comes as no surprise more and more Londoners are considering a step away from the capital for their next move, in search of more space inside and out, especially with flexible working set to be the norm moving forward.

Increasingly, buyers in south London are looking just a little further down the train line, to one of Surrey’s hidden gems, Oxted, in their hunt for a well-connected country home. Located just beyond the M25 and nestled at the bottom of the North Downs, it has all the trappings of a quintessential Surrey town, with a charming high street, strong community and abundance of green space.

An exciting new addition to Oxted is Courtyard Gardens, a new gated development just off the high street, by St William. As the only new development in the town, it’s a unique offering and as such, is proving popular with buyers. Comprising 111 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses, all set around beautiful, landscaped gardens. Each apartment also benefits from private outside space, in the form of a balcony or roof terrace, some of which overlook either these central gardens, or towards the North Downs just beyond the town.

For those who are unfamiliar with this leafy Surrey town, the team from St William has rounded up the top five reasons it’s attracting attention.

Its high street has all you need

At the heart of Oxted is its thriving high street, with its strong sense of community and range of boutiques and independent shops, as well as the much-needed essentials. Local foodie favourites include the Nepalese Gurkha Kitchen and Cucina Italiana, as well as cafés and bar such as The Cattle and Cocktail and The Ginistry. For culture vultures, there’s also a beautiful art deco Everyman Cinema as well as a thriving local theatre.

Located at the foothills of the North Downs, Oxted residents are surrounded by idyllic countryside and the outdoor lifestyle it offers, be it a leisurely dog walk or cycling one of the many trails.

In Oxted itself is Master Park, an expansive green space which hosts events throughout the year, including its very own festival. It’s a hive of activity, home to the town’s tennis, football and cricket clubs, as well as a host of weekly sessions, from kids’ activities to adult fitness classes.

Its educational offering

Surrey is renowned for its top-performing schools, both state and independent. Oxted, and the surrounding area, is somewhat of a hotspot for these educational institutions, with two Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ schools in the town itself, St Mary’s School and Limpsfield Church of England Infant School, as well as many more in the local vicinity – making it a sought-after location for young families.

Its connectivity

For those wanting to head into central London for work or leisure, trains from Oxted’s railway station, in the centre of town, take just 33 minutes to London Victoria and London Bridge – making the journey into the capital quick and easy. Gatwick Airport is a mere 20-minute drive, meaning international travel is just as straightforward, while for more local travel, Oxted has a great local bus service which connects the town with other key Surrey destinations.
