Location of the Day: Wandsworth/Putney

Posted 19 July 2022 by Keith Osborne

Wandsworth and Putney combine riverside living with great local amenities and excellent transport links...

London is famous for its huge variety of districts and neighbourhoods, with many of them undergoing major regeneration in recent years to bring a thoroughly modern aspect to their traditional character. Wandsworth and its neighbour Putney are just two of them.

Situated alongside the River Thames to the south-west of the capital’s centre, both are in the London Borough of Wandsworth, which also includes ever-changing places like Clapham, Battersea and Tooting. They’ve all been popular places to live and the large-scale redevelopment they’ve undergone has made them even more sought-after.

Wandsworth itself is the administrative centre of the borough and its town hall and council buildings are complemented by a host of shops, amenities, entertainment venues, restaurants and bars. Putney has an equally diverse range of places to shops and have fun, from big-name brands to quirky and characterful one-offs. Putney Bridge is the starting point of the Oxford/Cambridge Boat Race and there are a number of rowing clubs along the riverfront here. The area has a number of well-regarded state and private schools for all ages.

There are a number of green spaces to enjoy, such as Wandsworth Common, Wandsworth Park (which includes the Putt in the Park mini golf course) and St George’s Park. Further west, Putney Heath is an extensive area which leads to Wimbledon and Putney Commons.

Both areas have excellent transport links. Wandsworth Town and Putney Bridge stations have frequent National Rail services in and out of Waterloo, and being so close to Clapham Junction also offer easy connections to a multitude of places inside and out of London. On the Tube, there are stations at Putney Bridge, East Putney and Southfields. There are numerous bus services on routes to the likes of Richmond, Kingston-upon-Thames, Covent Garden and Victoria. There’s also a river service from Putney Pier and Wandsworth Riverside Quarter Pier.
