Is Custom Build the Future of Housing?

Posted 27 March 2020 by Katie Sakka

As the popularity of self-build continues to rise, housebuilders are beginning to tap into this growing trend. Michael Canham, Managing Director of Fernham Homes explores the opportunities it holds for new home buyers.

For more than 20 years, Channel 4’s Grand Designs has had the nation glued to their televisions, as each week we join another couple or family on their rollercoaster journey to making their self-build dream a reality.

This all makes great TV, but the reality is, despite the growing popularity for a bespoke home, self-build is extremely stressful. So stressful in fact, that only around 8 per cent of UK homes are built in this way according to BuyAssociation.

Where there is demand, there is opportunity

Like many housebuilders, at Fernham Homes we have always offered purchasers the opportunity to customise their homes, depending on the stage of the build when they reserve. But we recognised that we could take this tailoring one step further and so we developed Fernham Bespoke.

Building luxury, bespoke homes is not new territory for Fernham Homes. For more than 40 years, our sister company and builder AB Canham has been delivering unique, high-quality bespoke homes for clients lucky enough to have secured their plot of land in a prime location.

Whilst we delivered those clients a stunning home, it was they themselves that had to go through the pain of securing a plot of land; appointing an architect; submitting and securing planning approvals; complying with local authority stipulations and, in many cases, securing specialist self-build finance.

With Fernham Bespoke, clients can own a bespoke home without the stresses and financial risks of going it alone. Prime plots of land can be very difficult to come by, but that box has already been ticked by Fernham, so all the client needs to do is consider how they’d like the interior of their new home to look. We help to arrange specialist financial and legal advice to help clients through the process, and our in-house architect and specialist A1 Building Company AB Canham will help them to realise their dream. This frees our clients up to enjoy choosing the internal design, which makes the process an enjoyable experience, without the stresses involved in a self-build.

Good service is good business

Fernham Bespoke is already proving popular with buyers, which in turn will make it possible to develop smaller sites more quickly and economically, getting much-needed homes on to the market faster.

This new way of developing unique properties is part of our ongoing growth plan, to be able to compete with larger housebuilders on a national level, while maintaining the quality and personal touch of a family company.

Service is at the heart of what we do

In a challenging market, how are housebuilders standing out from the crowd? Or making sure that their customers are satisfied?

A home is the biggest purchase most of us will make and developers across the country are letting the public down by providing one-size-fits-all solutions, when every family is different.

One family might like to socialise and spend time together in a spacious, open plan living/dining area, while others may prefer to use the same space for the more formal option of a separate living and dining room. Equally, when it comes to bedrooms, some families might like rooms that are more equal in size with multiple en-suites, while other buyers might prefer a much larger master suite.

Why shouldn’t homeowners be able to design a home that’s right for them, right from the start?
