Great Places to Live: Bromsgrove, Worcestershire

Posted 23 January 2020 by Katie Sakka

If you’re looking for a great English countryside location for your next move, we highly recommend the quaint market town of Bromsgrove in Worcestershire.

The pretty, traditional market town of Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, England sits approximately 16 miles north-east of the cathedral city of Worcester. Full of old world character and charm, the town has been found to date back to the early 9th century and appears in the Doomesday Book as Bremesgrave. As well as being surrounded by many areas of natural beauty, Bromsgrove is also within easy reach of numerous historical places of interest including Harvington Hall - an Elizabethan estate with a moat, Warwick Castle - the iconic cliff top fortress and dungeons, Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings - a collection of 25 historic buildings rebuilt in a spacious area with gardens and a cider orchard, as well as various war memorials and museums.

Harvington Hall

In the Middle Ages Bromsgrove existed as a small market town and hub of the wool trade. By the eighteenth century, this had been dramatically overtaken by the thriving nail making industry which only started to decline in the 1920s. At the heart of the town since 1200 and still a lively event today, the popular town market is held in the Town Centre on High Street every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. This part of town recently underwent a £1.6 million heritage-led regeneration grant scheme to repair and enhance historic properties using traditional techniques, methods of construction and high quality natural or traditional materials. Surrounded by green spaces and sweeping hills, Bromsgrove is perfect for those of you that love the outdoors. Within a short distance of the town, you can find ideal walking locations such as Chaddesley Woods National Nature Reserve, Lickey Hills Country Park, The Worcester & Birmingham Canal, and the Walton and the Clent Hills. Bromsgrove is also host to Artrix - an arts space with an auditorium, dance studios and a gallery space hosting workshops and exhibitions, a football club, golf centre, gyms, a hospital, train station, Bromsgrove Sport & Leisure Centre, and a wide selection of high street favorite shops.

Whether you like evenings out or the occasional Sunday lunch you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice of places to get great food and drink. There are plenty of real ale pubs, family friendly chains like Pizza Express and Brewers Fayre Guild, and independent restaurants aplenty provide a great choice for locals.

A great centralised location for commuters and explorers alike, many towns and cities both north and south of Bromsgrove can be reached by car in less than an hour and a half. These include Coventry, Northampton, Leicester, Hereford, Gloucester, Wolverhampton, Nottingham, Cheltenham, and Oxford. Sitting almost halfway between Birmingham and Worcester, both these locations can be travelled to within 20 minutes by train, and under 40 minutes by car.
