Great Places to Live: Bingham, Nottinghamshire

Posted 30 January 2020 by Katie Sakka

If like myself you enjoy the history, myths, and legends of our great country you may wish to make your home in any number of our great cities and towns in counties throughout the length and breadth of Britain. One county in particular, that holds an almost magical quality is that of Nottinghamshire, home to the legendary Robin Hood and location of Sherwood Forest.

There are many great places to live in Nottinghamshire, one of the smallest and loveliest being the little market town of Bingham, 9 miles east of the city of Nottingham, nestled right in the beautiful countryside, surrounded on all sides by lush green fields and close to the gorgeous Vale of Belvoir, Belvoir Castle, Cotgrave Country Park and Belton House.

According to Cornelius Brown in his book, A History of Nottinghamshire 1896, “Bingham is a substantially-built little town, and has a history which goes back to very early times.” In fact, Romans built a fortress on the site of the village which was then known as Margidunum, close to the Fosse Way, a Roman road that linked Exeter to Lincoln, and a settlement 8 miles away on the River Trent at East Stoke. There is still a smattering of historical buildings and listed properties about the town with St Mary and All Saints' church, being the oldest in the town - building started in 1225 and still contains the tomb of Richard of Bingham who was Sheriff of Nottingham in 1302. Today this small market town is home to many independent local businesses as well as high street favourites like Costa Coffee. There is also a leisure centre, tennis, rugby, football and sports clubs, train station, and many other local amenities.

If you like socialising close to home without the need to go into Nottingham, Bingham has something for everyone. The Wheatsheaf Pub is a cosy establishment with a good selection of beers and cocktails, plus outdoor seating for the summer months, while The Horse & Plough is great for vegans with a lovely selection of dishes. There are also several takeaways and cafes and some smaller independent eateries like Rose & May who serve English favourites like ploughman’s platters and warm cheese scones.

Bingham

Ideally situated for the daily commute or weekend activities with the family, Nottingham is a 20 minute train journey from Bingham on the EMR line or a 30 minute journey by car. Derby is a little further away and can be reached in approximately 1 hour by either car or train. Thanks to the A46 you can reach Leicester in 35 minutes by car. To the north, Newark-on-Trent is 20 minutes by car and Lincoln just under an hour by car.

There is a good selection of local schools in the immediate area.
