Show Home Room By Room: Hornsey Town Hall, Crouch End
Steeped in history, with a rich heritage stretching back to 1935, the Art Deco Grade II listed Hornsey Town Hall will form a vibrant new community in one of London’s most popular urban villages.
This landmark development includes an arts centre and hotel in the meticulously restored Town Hall, an improved public square and a newly built collection of one- and two-bedroom apartments situated in the Town Hall grounds.
This unique scheme has been developed by Far East Consortium (FEC), in conjunction with award-winning Make Architects who inspired the design and architecture of North London’s new destination address. As well as restoring the unique period features found throughout The Hall, they have channelled its distinctive modernist style into the apartments.
Proving hugely popular, Hornsey Town Hall is now 80% sold mostly to owner-occupiers, who have been drawn to its location, community spaces and the collection of modern homes on offer.
John Connolly, head of UK Development at Far East Consortium, comments: “It’s wonderful to see a true London landmark take on a new lease of life. We have honoured its distinguished legacy whilst creating new uses, which has proved a perfect combination for buyers.”
Uren House is named after Reginald Uren, who was commissioned as the lead architect to design the Town Hall in the early 1930s, it became the home of Hornsey Borough Council. In 1933, he won the architectural competition to design Hornsey Town Hall against a field of 281 entries. The Town Hall was his first major commission in Britain and one of the first large modernist designs constructed in the country. A pioneering concept at the time, the design was well received and Uren was awarded the RIBA London Architecture Medal for 1935. Today, it is one of the earliest and most iconic examples of modernist architecture in Britain and includes grand staircases, terrazzo flooring, original ironmongery and metal balustrades, all of which have been restored.
In the grounds of the Town Hall, Uren House which features the stylish two-bedroom show apartment illustrates perfectly to potential buyers what life could really be like at Hornsey Town Hall.
