Keith OsborneOakbridge Bespoke has revealed the depth to which the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted homeowners’ priorities, as they reveal 2021’s hottest home design trends.
Top of the list are fully fitted out gyms. Having the space to exercise at home has never before been quite such a priority. The Oakbridge team reports that clients’ requirements are now extending well beyond the traditional exercise bike and running machine; homeowners are demanding mirrored walls, rubberised floors, dumbbell areas, squat racks – everything they would normally expect to use in a professional gym.
Also high on the list of priorities are dual-purpose rooms, as Oakbridge Bespoke’s Michael Clifton explains:
“We’ve seen a notable spike in demand for rooms that have multiple uses over time. A study that doubles as a snug or a dining room is one such example. We’ve also designed a study that doubles as a gym to serve the dual need to work from home and keep fit at home that so many people are experiencing right now.”
Home-working and home-schooling have also ensured that offices are one of 2021’s hottest home design trends. These include both his-and-hers office setups and dedicated children’s workspaces that are within sight of the home’s main living space and/or kitchen.
The new family dynamics created by the pandemic are shaping the way that houses are designed, as well as the way that they are used.
Another top 2021 trend is an increase in the importance of retreat spaces. Wellness spaces and cocooning rooms are providing individuals with the space to escape temporarily into a place of calm, quiet and safety.
“Retreat spaces can benefit mental health in a number of important ways. They provide a place for individuals to cocoon themselves away from the outside world and the stresses of the pandemic. Just as importantly, they provide a quiet space away from family life – somewhere that it’s ok to spend some down time to recharge and refresh. These spaces are often notable for their absence of digital distractions, emphasising that sense of escape from connection with the world.”
The final 2021 home design trend highlighted by the Oakbridge Bespoke team is, understandably, demand for high-tech filtration and ventilation systems. These state-of-the art solutions reflect homeowners’ desire to do all they can to keep their homes virus-free. Other enhanced hygiene features include boot/utility rooms and separate bathrooms for guests and family members to use.
The Covid-19 pandemic has created widescale change across the UK. While some parts of life will inevitably return to ‘normal’ after the virus is finally under control, it seems that homeowners are taking on board some longer-term lessons and changes. As Oakbridge Bespoke’s Michael Clifton concludes: “From high-tech safety solutions to spaces that promote both physical and mental wellbeing, the pandemic has changed the very design of our homes.”
