About McCarthy Stone

McCarthy Stone is the leading housebuilder for retirement properties in the UK. It was formed by John McCarthy and Bill Stone, who became partners in 1975, and focussed on building retirement properties from 1977.

It exclusively builds retirement developments, and it offers three unique age-exclusive accommodation options: Retirement Living, Retirement Living PLUS and Lifestyle Living. Retirement Living offers buyers their own apartments and independent living, with some shared social facilities. Retirement Living PLUS offers the same benefits, but also provides additional support and on-site catering. Lifestyle Living is designed for over-55s who are still active and wanting a new, luxury home.

The company’s developments can be found right across Britain, and it has retirement properties in rural and coastal areas, as well as in major towns and cities.

McCarthy Stone offers Part Exchange, a Smooth Move service, which includes free specialist removals when the time to move arrives and a contribution towards estate agent costs and legal fees, and a Try Before You Buy scheme, which allows prospective buyers the chance to spend two nights at a development.

They won Bronze in the Best Retirement Development category at the WhatHouse? Awards in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 and won the Silver award in 2021 and 2022. Most recently they won Silver in the Best Retirement Home Developer category at the WhatHouse? Awards 2023.

It is the only housebuilder to achieve a five-star rating in the Housebuilding Federation Satisfaction Survey every year since the survey began in 2005

Award Comments
The biggest in the sector, McCarthy Stone currently supports more than 22,000 customers, typically in their 80s, across 504 retirement developments – a combined community asset value of more than £3.5bn.
Big, but agile, McCarthy Stone is always looking to create more opportunities and different forms of retirement living to cater for the huge variety of needs across an
ever-growing demographic, with affordability a key driver. It offers homes for rent and shared ownership and has a development partnership with Anchor,  England’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing and care for older people.
