Ben SalisburyTrying to get on the property ladder as a single person in the area where you grew up is a problem mirrored across the UK, but particularly in London and the South of England.
The number of single-person households is growing and recent research by the Department of Communities and Local Government estimates that the number of single person households will go up by 68,000 a year until 2039, equivalent to one third of total household growth.
So, it is uplifting to hear the story of a young Londoner whose determination to buy a home in the area that she grew up in has been successful.
Priscilla Matadeen, 30, a non-medical prescriber from Raynes Park, has recently purchased her first home – a one-bedroom apartment at the eco-friendly Lendlease development, Cambium, in Southfields.
Concerned about the rise in property prices and wanting to own her own home, Priscilla took her parents’ advice and began saving to make her first step onto the property ladder. Having lived in south west London most of her life Priscilla had always dreamed of purchasing within the area.
With the help of her father, who was keen for both his daughters to own their own homes, it wasn’t long before Priscilla found her dream home at Cambium – a well-connected location (zone 3) with a typical inner city village feel, combined with the luxury of open spaces and local parks; in her words, “exactly what I was looking for”.
Priscilla Matadeen, says: “Location, design and, most importantly, security were the three key aspects I really looked for when searching for my first home. I love south west London, and unlike my sister who purchased further afield, I couldn’t imagine living elsewhere.
“I was looking for a high-quality product that would make a good long-term investment for the future. The open plan new-build element at Cambium was very attractive, and the modern contemporary features such as underfloor heating and stone worktops in the kitchen were highly important in my decision making.
“The thought of living in and owning your own property can be a somewhat daunting prospect, however I was instantly reassured by the security at Cambium, such as CCTV, secure entry, video access, and privacy from the surrounding trees and shading from the old oak tree.
“I can’t wait to move in and really make it my own home. Now all I need to worry about is the fun bit - adding my own creative flair!”
Priscilla purchased her one-bedroom apartment for £500,000, including all fees and stamp duty.
Cambium offers a selection of highly sustainable new homes perfect for young professionals and young families. Situated minutes from Southfields station and Wimbledon Common, and just a short walk to Putney, Cambium combines the best of modern park-side and village living.
Lendlease is dedicated to bringing the community together through its creation of open public realm including landscaped gardens and an eco-play area for children. The development, which comprises 55 townhouses and 55 apartments, is centred around a newly open green space featuring a 200-year-old oak tree, believed to have been planted by celebrated landscape architect, Capability Brown.
Prices start from: £429,950 for a one-bedroom apartment.
