New Home Leads To New Career

Posted 18 October 2021 by Helen Christie

For Jeri Ryan, buying her dream Miller home was the key that unlocked a passion for interior design, taking her into a new career as an online interior stylist...

Two years on from purchasing the home of her dreams at Miller Homes Springhill Meadows development in Barrhead, salon-owner Jeri has created a show home haven for herself, her partner and her two daughters, Mia, 11, and Paige, 9.

Buying a new build home offers much in the way of flexibility and versatility, especially when it comes to décor. When buyers reserve their new home, they purchase a blank canvas, allowing them to personalise their home from the outset.

Like many decorating novices, it was a process Jeri found daunting at first, but the experience of styling her home from blank canvas to show home-chic led her to fall in love with the world of design, so much so that Jeri decided to document her interiors journey on social media. Her take on sleek, glossy interiors has clearly hit the mark, as she now has over 11k followers and growing, eagerly awaiting the latest addition to her home.

Now, Jeri works helping homebuyers across the UK transform their new house into the home of their dreams and sharing the continuation of her design journey on Instagram at @home_style_glasgow.

Jeri says: "I always wanted to live in a new build home, and when the plot at Miller Homes' Springhill Meadows development was released for sale, we had to go for it. We were fortunate that we had no chain, so we could move in as soon as the house was ready. I remember driving around weekly to look at the progression of the build, I was so excited, and the sales team at Miller Homes were utterly terrific. We were so lucky to get this house; Springhill Meadows is close to my salon in Barrhead, and it's got lots of countryside around it, plus our home has stunning views of Glasgow and the surrounding hills. We've been here for two years now, and I still love it so much.

"We chose the four-bedroom Yeats as it offered us so much space and storage. I also really loved the jack-and-jill en-suite, which is great for my daughters to share. While we were waiting for our home to be ready, we had to start thinking about how we wanted it to look, and that's really where it all began. I got so much inspiration from Miller Homes' showhomes; we viewed the Yeats showhome at Newton Park in Cambuslang, which I just fell in love with, and the Mitford showhome at Springhill Meadows was gorgeous too. I took lots of photographs of the showhomes, and I was never away from Instagram, looking at home blogs and interiors accounts to get more inspiration.

"One of the best things about buying our Miller home was being able to choose the fixtures and fittings before we moved in and being able to make any upgrades we wanted. We chose tiles for the bathrooms, and for the kitchen, we went with grey gloss cabinets with a white worktop and integrated appliances. We opted for wooden flooring downstairs, with carpets upstairs. It was great to get those basic things nailed down and having so many of the 'big' jobs done before we even moved in!

"One of the biggest things I wanted to get right was the lighting. I fell in love with the dramatic bedside pendant lights from the Yeats showhome, so one of the first jobs we did was to remove the central lights from the bedrooms and swap them for spotlights, with beautiful smoky pendant lights on either side of the bed.

"My daughters are a bit older now, so we could get them involved in the design process. I don't like clutter, so we bought bed bases with extra storage that they could keep their toys in, and the fitted wardrobes in their bedrooms were ideal for everything else. We also decided to turn the fourth bedroom into a dressing room for the girls and me. We built a storage unit and a dressing table with a bench so we can all get ready together, which is fab! We love getting the music on and having a pamper, just the three of us.

"I've always loved interiors and think it's essential to be organised in your home, as it makes things a lot easier to manage. The great thing about a new build home is you can start from a clean slate, but to avoid being overwhelmed, it is worth taking time to get the basics in place (or at least planned out) before you move in. I always say that I want my home to look nice, but it has to be functional.

"I never expected that buying my Miller home would lead me to a whole new part of my career, but my interiors blog took off, and I am so passionate about it. I started my account because I was learning so much and thought it might be helpful to share the process with others. It gathered so much momentum and led to me studying an online interior design course during lockdown last year, which was challenging but rewarding. I'm now making mood boards for people all over the UK, supporting them on their design journey and helping them to style their homes on their budget.

"I absolutely love living in my Miller home, and I'd do it all over again – except that I never want to move from here!"
