Peace Of Mind For Berkshire Couple

Posted 12 October 2022 by Helen Christie

Paul and Tina have downsized to a three-bedroom home at Newbury Racecourse from David Wilson Homes…

Paul, 66, and Tina, 62, a retired business development consultant and IT specialist respectively, have recently purchased their fifth home and downsized to secure a more tranquil retreat.

Originally from Uxbridge near West London, Paul and Tina met while working for the same company and, after getting married, they bought their first house, which was also a new build. After their daughter moved to Newbury Racecourse seven years ago, they decided that they wanted to be closer to her and their grandchildren, so began looking for a home in Newbury.

Paul says: “Apart from wanting to be closer to our daughter, we wanted a quiet residential area with access to good walking routes to Newbury town centre and the local shops. A property that was low maintenance with an attractive outlook was also a priority for us. We have been aware of the David Wilson Homes development for some time, and more so since our daughter moved here. Whilst the development plans as a whole were attractive, we had particular interest in the homes with south-facing gardens that overlooked the racecourse.”

Through buying a new build property, Paul and Tina were able to customise aspects of their new home, such as having a kitchen island, an extended patio and a rear gate.

The layout of the home appealed to Paul and Tina, as having three bedrooms meant that they could have their grandchildren to stay over, and the location enables easy access to the amenities in Newbury. As their new home backs onto the green space of the racecourse, it also provides a fantastic view for the couple.

Paul continues: “We spent a significant amount of time, money and energy getting our previous home to our liking and, whilst we loved the garden, external garage and country outlook, it was very close to a noisy, busy main road.

Tina adds: “Our new home brings us closer to our daughter and our grandchildren, who are a short walk away, but also the peace and quiet of the racecourse.  We also have peace of mind that there will be no unexpected expensive repairs given we are now retired.”

Downsizing and changing locations was definitely the right decision for the couple, as they are now free to enjoy their retirement, knowing that they could put their own stamp on their new property without dipping into their savings.

Tina continues: “We are enjoying all aspects of our new home. We did want an island installed in the kitchen which, after discussion and advice from the sales team, we agreed on the size, position and materials. The island has transformed our kitchen and diner into an entertaining area, which leaves our living room for relaxation. The living room offers amazing views across the racecourse and to the lake beyond. Looking out from the balcony doors, we often see geese and deer enjoying the lush racecourse grass.”

Home to a wide range of apartments and houses, the development on Home Straight boasts panoramic views over Newbury Racecourse itself, as well as a good range of local amenities.

There is currently a selection of two- to five-bedroom homes available at Newbury Racecourse with prices starting at £359,000.
