Shops and amenities
Deal is considered a bit of a haven for shoppers, mixing big-name brands (a large Sainsbury’s/Argos on the edge of town) with a host of independent specialists, from fishmongers to galleries. There’s a post office on Queen Street and a number of high street banks. A market takes place every Saturday. Deal is served by a number of doctors’ surgeries and the nearest hospital is in Canterbury, around half-an-hour’s drive away.
Places to eat and drink
Like many coastal towns, Deal has a wealth of pubs and takeaways to choose from. Just last year, the Guardian picked the Hoy for its mix of character and a delightful sun-soaked patio garden, and The Green Berry in Walmer has won several CAMRA awards. Leisure and entertainment
In addition to traditional seafront arcades and opportunities to swim and fish, there are tennis and croquet clubs, facilities for swimming, bowls and skateboarding while Betteshanger Park offers a host of activities as well as open spaces and woodland. There are local teams for football, cricket and rugby. Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club is just north of the town and Royal St George’s is a little further away in Sandwich. Both Deal and Walmer have historic castles to explore. It’s a 20-minute drive to the walking and cycling routes across the North Downs.
Transport
A number of bus routes serve the town and local area. Deal and Walmer stations and both served by High Speed services along the Kent coast and into the capital. It’s around 20 minutes to Ramsgate, 25 minutes to Dover, 45 minutes to Ashford International and 90 minutes to St Pancras International. By road, it’s under 20 minutes to Dover and the A2, 30 minutes to Canterbury and 70 minutes to the M25.
