Heritage Apartments Launched At Grade II Listed London Building

Posted 27 October 2022 by Helen Christie

Telford Homes has launched six ‘Heritage Collection’ apartments at Ernő Goldfinger’s Balfron Tower in Tower Hamlets…

Telford Homes, together with Poplar HARCA and Londonnewcastle, launched a new exclusive collection of ‘Heritage Apartments’ as part of the sensitive restoration of one of London’s most iconic buildings, Balfron Tower.

Lauded as one of the most innovative examples of residential design from the 1960s, the Grade II listed building has been given a new lease of life, providing a total of 146 new homes.

Each of the six apartments in this newly launched ‘Heritage Collection’ preserve the original designs imagined by iconic Modernist architect, Ernő Goldfinger. As prominent examples of brutalist architecture - characterised by bold, sculptural exteriors and spacious internal and communal spaces - the design teams of Ab Rogers Design and Studio Egret West used copious amounts of documentation from Goldfinger’s archives to create these unique homes.

As Goldfinger intended, the apartments are flooded with natural light and benefit from epic views of the London skyline from large windows that allow you to see the sun rise and set. The generous living space is enhanced by raw materials, carefully sourced to match those specified by Goldfinger where possible, as well as a muted colour palette, and distinctive and stylish oversized tiles and open shelving. Every flat also has a private balcony that maintains the concrete exterior that makes the Tower such a strong presence in London’s East End.

One of the most celebrated leaders of the brutalist movement, Ernő Goldfinger’s own apartment is also included in the Heritage Collection. Residents of this home will be able to enjoy the spaces once occupied by their designer, who had a well-publicised stay in the Tower after its construction in 1967.

Buyers of the new heritage apartments will also have access to a range of communal ‘third spaces’, upholding Goldfinger’s vision of multi-family living and creating a strong sense of community for residents. From a new cookery room and interconnecting dining room, providing a space for residents to hold private functions, a fully stocked library, a gymnasium and yoga room, a cinema room, music room and co-working room, these facilities make the most of these spaces set within the fabric of the original concrete service tower. The building is crowned by a rooftop garden; a refined and secluded al fresco space for residents’ events and dining, enlivened with planting and contemporary furniture and offering breathtaking views across London.

The Tower is set in the heart of Poplar. Sales of the Balfron Tower homes will help to fund new affordable housing and transformative landscaping works on neighbouring estates in Poplar. The proposed redevelopment of the surrounding area includes the approved regeneration plans of 650 new homes, improved market, shopping and amenity areas, which will create a new destination within the shadow of Balfron Tower. This includes Chrisp Street Market, the character of which will be preserved and enhanced, together with the creation of a new multi-screen cinema and food and drink concessions, alongside provisions for independent and established retail

Located at the gateway to East London and Canary Wharf, Balfron Tower also offers great connections within and outside the capital. With the opening of Crossrail, Canary Wharf to Heathrow central now takes just 40 minutes, while the same train can take residents to Bond Street in 13 minutes. Stratford is just as close, while the City of London and the West End are both easily accessed. As well as being integrated into the capital’s network of cycle superhighways, Poplar also has excellent connectivity to London city airport, providing quick and easy access to over 30 major European cities.

With Ernő Goldfinger’s apartment already sold, prospective buyers should act fast to secure one of the limited Heritage Apartments. Prices for the Heritage Apartments start at £400,000, and one-bedroom apartments in the building starting at £375,000.

The sales suite is located at Balfron Tower, 76 St. Leonards Road, LONDON, E14 0QT.
