Our favourite new home right now is ‘Hillcrest’, a luxury family house from a WhatHouse? Award winner in rural Somerset...

We report on our favourite new build house for sale right now, ‘Hillcrest’, which is available at a development called Lakeview from WhatHouse? Award-winning Best Small Housebuilder, Galion Limited.

Lakeview is an exclusive development located in the village of Keinton Mandeville, a few miles from Glastonbury, and ‘Hillcrest’ is a one-off executive house type which provides the space and high specification one would expect for its asking price of £1.25million. Galion has designed it to combine the traditional with the contemporary, with a period-style architecture built around the modern interior layout and standards discerning buyers look for these days.

In all, ‘Hillcrest’ offers 2,631 sq ft of living space over two storeys in addition to a generous private garden, private driveway and double garage which is future-proofed for electric vehicle charging.

HillcrestThe first thing to notice on entering this characterful home is the spacious and welcoming hallway, which immediately demonstrates the feeling of space that the above-average ceiling height provides. Off to one side is the sitting room which comes with a feature solid-fuel fireplace and two sets of French doors to the rear garden’s flagstone terrace. The hub of the home is a large, triple-aspect, open-plan kitchen/dining/family room, designed by Neptune, with a feature island unit and its own two sets of French doors to the garden. The ground floor also has a cloakroom, utility/boot room with further worktops, sink and storage units, and there are also a number of useful cupboards off the hallway such as under the stairs, ensuring no space is wasted.

Upstairs, all five bedrooms are large double rooms. The principal bedroom has an en suite shower room with twin basins, and a dressing area with fitted walk-in wardrobes. It also has three large windows to proving a light and airy feel to this important room. Bedroom two also comes with an en suite shower room, while bedroom three has two windows providing a view over the rear garden. Finally, there’s a large family bathroom with bath and separate walk-in shower.

Hillcrest‘Hillcrest’ benefits from a state-of-the-art electrical eco-heating system including an in-roof solar system installed on the garage. Superfast broadband capabilities with individual fibreoptic cables are installed directly to the home and are also part of the well thought out utilities package.

Lakeview is an exclusive development of 27 three-, four- and five-bedroom homes which sits at the heart of the village of Keinton Mandeville, and all the homes have been designed to reflect the traditional architecture of the area and the existing properties surrounding the development. It’s a low-density site which offers a newly planted orchard with landscaped walks and a wildflower meadow, a ‘village green’ and a number of allotments available to rent.

HillcrestKeinton Mandeville sits midway between the market towns of Somerton to the west, and Castle Cary to the east. Glastonbury and Yeovil are both under 20 minutes away too. It dates back to the Roman times and owes its growth to the local Blue Lias stone, a material which is widely used at Lakeview, which itself is situated on a former shallow quarry site.

Today, the village has a population of around 1,000 people and has a local store, village pub and other amenities as well as Keinton Mandeville Primary School, which is located near the centre of the village and achieves some of the highest academic standards in the area. The village hall is the hub of the community and regularly hosts adult education classes, Sea Scouts, Brownies, a variety of activities and a daily doctor's surgery.

The village is surrounded by agricultural land from five farms, two of which have popular farm shops. There are also playing fields with children's play area, tennis court and a skateboard park.
