History and Heritage Honoured at Aberdeen Development

Barratt Homes is honouring the history and heritage of the Granite City at Westburn Gardens...

Westburn Gardens, a new build homes development from Barratt Homes taking shape in Aberdeen, is honouring the history and heritage of the Granite City.

Proving popular with families, first-time buyers and professional couples, it’s a range of modern houses, luxury renovated apartments and trendy townhouses on a site packed with stories since it was first occupied as a part of Cornhill Hospital in 1737 and considered to be linked to the hamlet of Berryden which was on the periphery of the city.

Westburn Gardens has two- and three-bedroom apartments within the refurbished Westburn House. The impressive building, made with Aberdeen Granite, was once known as the Upper Hospital and this was built around 1890. Buildings were constructed and connected around private courtyards which Barratt Homes has retained and into open green spaces. The development has 245 new homes, a range of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes and one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, many of which include balconies with views over the courtyards.

Granite buildings have been restored to their former glory and the stone recovered from construction has also been reused on site for the construction of boundary walls and landscaping, enhanced by retained mature trees. Also here is the Forbes of Newe Obelisk, designed by John Smith in 1830, which the housebuilder has preserved, restored and moved it once again to its prime courtyard position.

Mike Cowie, sales and marketing director at Barratt North Scotland, said: “Westburn Gardens enjoys a prime city location, and has attracted a range of upsizers and resizers looking for a home and environment that offers the best of Aberdeen living.”

The Mahmoud familyOnce of the families which has purchased here are the Mahmouds, who took advantage of Barratt’s Part Exchange initiative. Bahaa, his wife and four children moved into a new townhouse and have found it to be the ideal home for their growing family.

“Our previous home was becoming too small for our family and we really liked the townhouses on offer at Westburn Gardens because they’re built to a high standard and offer lots of space and flexibility,” said Bahaa. “From moving from a semi-detached two-bedroom home, with only one bathroom, our new home has transformed my family’s life. We now have a family bathroom, en suite and WC so getting the family ready in the mornings is definitely less stressful than it used to be.

“We chose to move to the development because of its great location. It’s close enough to the city centre for us and the local schools are fantastic. Our children haven’t had to move school and as our family grows and gets older, Aberdeen Grammar School is nearby.”

Prices at Westburn Gardens currently range from £239,995 to £279,995 for three-bedroom homes, including the last apartment at Westburn House for £249,995. A new collection of homes, known as Royal Cornhill Apartments, is coming soon.
