The Development That Sets New Standards For Retirement Living

Posted 13 February 2018 by Keith Osborne

We take a first look at Auriens Chelsea, a luxury central London development with pioneering features for its retirement-age residents...

Located in one of London’s most sought-after locations, the inaugural retirement development from new specialist developer Auriens aims to set unprecedented, top-end specification and services to a discerning market of later-living property purchasers.

Set on Dovehouse Green on King’s Road, the new development mixes stylish exterior design with a bespoke top-quality interior specification with a host of innovative features as well as a range of medical and lifestyle services that provide security and the highest level of luxury living, unmatched in any UK development built exclusively for buyers over 65-years-old.

The new building is set just back from one of the capital’s most famous streets and comprises one- and two-bedroom apartments in spacious, open-plan layouts, plenty of natural light, interiors unique to this development designed by Richmond International and many pioneering internal features.

For example, kitchen units have been specially designed to move downwards by motor to worktop level, to assist those with limited ability to reach up. The ‘circadian’ lighting system can be set to vary the shade of light throughout the day, so that regardless of the outdoor conditions, the internal lights can mimic sunlight – a feature that has been found to help those with SAD. There is also an internal ‘radar’ with a NASA connection, that can analyse residents’ movements and alert the internal medical team to potential problems.

The development team continues to research every element of retiree-related living to provide a host of new features that are both luxurious and practical, with which they can modify the specification of the development as it gets built.

Auriens ChelseaThere is 24-hour care for residents as standard, available to their personal requirement and carried out by Draycott Nursing, which has a 20-year record for providing pedigree caring for high-profile clientele.

This £200m development will also offer its residents a range of exclusive, high-quality leisure facilities on site such as a pool and gym, cinema, spa, members’ club and pet parlour. Luxury hotel-style concierge and chauffeur services are also provided.

Alongside these are a wine cellar and a restaurant, which will be led by consultant Seb Fogg, who has made a name for himself working with a number of high-profile restaurants around the world. Residents will be able to invite friends and family to enjoy the food and service as well as access to a private, landscaped garden which has been designed by RHS Chelsea Flower Show multiple award-winner, Andy Sturgeon.

With completion of the scheme planned for late 2019, interest has already been seriously shown to the first release of properties, with a significant number of potential purchasers already living with a couple of miles in prime areas such as Knightsbridge and Kensington.

Auriens has been founded and run by Johnny Sandelson and Karen Mulville, two property developers inspired by their own dissatisfaction of the level of retirement homes available to their own parents. Release of the scheme, where prices are expected to start at around £3m, has come some five years after they started working on what the development would offer.

Sandelson says: “At Auriens we want to change perceptions of later lifers, offering our customers the service of a luxury hotel, the care of a Swiss medical clinic, and style of a private member’s club.”

Of Auriens Studio, the advanced marketing suite near Sloane Square that showcases what the development will offer, Mulville adds: ”This isn’t your average show studio. It’s a test bed for the latest and most creative innovations for later-life living, something that we are very passionate about here at Auriens. It gives a feel of what it would be like to live in this luxury residence, providing that wow factor for our prospective customers.”
