Stamp Duty Bonus To Barratt’s Thank You To NHS Workers
The revised Stamp Duty threshold introduced this week by Chancellor Rishi Sunak is a bonus for NHS workers buying a new home from Housebuilder of the Year Barratt Developments.
In May, as a ‘thank you’ to the NHS at the height of the coronavirus pandemic in the UK, the company – under its Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes and Barratt London brands – introduced a special scheme where it gives the buyer the 5% deposit on their new home, up to £15,000. The offer is in place until the end of December 2020.
Barratt has been working hard throughout the coronavirus crisis to support the NHS. Among the many things the company has donated to date are:
- £100,000 to NHS Charities Together
- A further £50,000 to The Sun’s Who Cares Wins campaign, providing help for frontline NHS staff.
- 5,000 medical-grade facemasks to hospitals across the country
- Its entire stock of 400 defibrillators to St John Ambulance in England and Wales and St Andrew’s First Aid in Scotland.
David Thomas, chief executive of Barratt Developments, said: “We want to say a big thank you to our brilliant NHS workers who have shown such courage in the face of the COVID-19 crisis. This is why we are announcing this new NHS deposit contribution scheme to thank them for all they have done.”
New rules for England and Northern Ireland which came into effect on 8 July means that buyers will pay no Stamp Duty on homes priced up to £500,000. This new threshold is applicable until 31 March 2021. On a Barratt home priced £300,000, an NHS worker would have a £15,000 deposit donated by the company. Under the old rules, those who were already homeowners (but not first-time buyers) would have to have paid £4,750 in Stamp Duty. Under the new rules, it’s down to zero. bringing the total saving to nearly £20,000 on the same property three months ago.
