The removal experts from LOVESPACE have identified the top six hacks to save money when moving house...

Moving comes with a lot of unforeseen costs that may quickly add up. According to recent research, the average home mover spends more than £1,000 on removals.

Moving stress can be reduced by planning ahead and being as cost-effective as possible when working out how to move their belongings between houses. Some of the easiest ways to cut down on costs are decluttering before the move, booking the removal firm as early as possible and checking for discounts.

A spokesperson from LOVESPACE says: “Moving to a new house is an overwhelming process and that’s why moving costs can sometimes be a bit of an afterthought. However, factoring in every expense before the moving day will ensure that the move goes as smoothly as possible. Booking a removals company should be done as early as possible to avoid higher last minute fees and to make sure that there’s availability on the day you wish to move. It’s also important to do some research on your selected removals firm to make sure they are affordable and reliable - you don’t want to get all prepared just to be stranded on the big day.”

Here are LOVESPACE’s top six hacks for a cost-effective move:

Declutter

Packing up an entire home can be overwhelming and costly, so movers are encouraged to lessen the load by working through their possessions and getting rid of some of the things they no longer need. Having a major clear-out means that movers will be saving time and money by requiring fewer packing materials and a smaller van.

Book early and move mid-week

Booking a removals firm early means that movers can compare prices and take their pick from different firms, rather than settling for whoever has availability. It’s also recommended to opt for a mid-week move, as companies can up their prices during the weekend.

Cut the packing costs

If movers have some extra time on their hands then they don’t have to spend money on hiring a removals firm to pack up their belongings. Packing costs can also be cut by starting to save boxes in the months or weeks building up to the move, or by asking friends and family if they have any spare. There’s no need to waste money on bubble wrap, as fragile items can also be wrapped with clothes you need to pack.

Avoid delays

Time is money when it comes to hiring a removal service, because anything that slows down the removal men can result in extra costs. Movers must make sure to finish all their packing before the team arrives and arrange easy access to the property. Any large items should be taken apart to ensure they fit out of the door.

Check for discounts

Movers should keep an eye out for any discounts they can score when booking a removals company. Some companies offer refer a friend, student, key worker or armed forces discounts. Even a small discount can help out with keeping the costs down.

Keep your deposit

Leaving the property damaged or unclean can result in charges or a non-returned deposit. Movers should make sure to be careful with moving large items and no rubbish should be left behind. The new buyers should find the property in the same state as it was when it was listed.

LOVESPACE offers a UK-wide removals service with convenient online booking and an upfront price. This is alongside its storage with collection and delivery service which can help renters and homeowners make the most of their space at home.
