6 of the best villages to consider around Woking

Woking is a historic town situated south west of London in the Surrey commuter belt. London is some 25 away minutes by train and the town is close to both the M3 and M25 motorways.

Woking was first recorded as a monastery site in the 8th Century, though modern Woking has built up around the Basingstoke Canal, which opened in 1794, and the railway station, built in 1838.

Knaphill

Knaphill is a large village to the west of Woking with a population of around 9,000. There is a wide selection of shops along the village High Street and The Broadway, and a range of pubs and restaurants. Much of the village is made up of 20th century housing estates, though signs of the past remain. The town is popular with commuters, who travel to London from nearby Woking and Brookwood stations.

Bisley

Bisley is a village four miles west of Woking on the A322 Guildford Road. Most famous as home to one of the world's premier for rifle shooting competitions, the village has a busy church, a primary school and a popular village hall used by a number of local groups. The Bear Inn pub offers a wide-ranging food and drinks menu in an old-fashioned atmosphere.

Chobham

Chobham is located four miles northwest of Woking on the A319 and close to the M3 motorway. This exclusive area of large detached homes is highly sought after by those wanting a country lifestyle close to the London. Local amenities include a primary school, village hall and church, and villagers enjoy an annual carnival and autumn music festival. The pretty High Street is lined with red brick and white painted houses and a range of independent traders and shops, while elsewhere in the village a number of listed building include Chobham House and Brook Place. Nearby Chobham Common provides wide open green spaces and woodlands.

West Byfleet

West Byfleet is a situated four miles east of Woking deep in the heart of the Surrey stockbroker belt, bounded by the Basingstoke Canal to the north and the M25 motorway and Wey navigation canal to the east. The village benefits from four mainline services from West Byfleet station to London Waterloo per hour, taking between 30 and 40 minutes.

Send

The little village of Send is located two miles south east of Old Woking. Send First School, St Bede's Junior School, St Mary's Church and the Evangelical Church and the village's Lancaster Hall offer many focal points for the village's 4,500 residents, who can also enjoy the surrounding countryside including Send Marsh, site of the Grade II listed Manor house and village green.

Ottershaw

Ottershaw is situated five miles northeast of Woking centre on the A320 road. The primary school in Fletcher Road and village hall are among the local landmarks, alongside Christ Church and two pubs, The Otter and The Castle. The local park is home to a number of football teams and the village offers a range of clubs and local organisations for its 3,000 inhabitants.
