Life in the old dog – L&Q revives Walthamstow Stadium with new affordable homes

Posted 2 March 2016 by Keith Osborne

Major London housing provider L&Q is bringing life back to the former Walthamstow greyhound stadium with a collection of new Shared Ownership homes...

The iconic Art Deco façade of Walthamstow Stadium in north-east London is being restored to former glories by L&Q, which is launching a collection of 99 new Shared Ownership homes on the historic site this weekend (Saturday 5 March).

Stadium Place will offer a mix of one- to four-bedroom apartments, houses and maisonettes, with buyers able to purchase as little as 25% initially, with the opportunity to buy further shares in their home at a later date if they wish. The first release of homes consist of one- and two-bedroom houses and two- and three-bedroom maisonettes, together with one- and two-bedroom apartments, which are scheduled for completion this summer.

A fully furnished show home will open this month to demonstrate to buyers the quality of build and specification they can expect, and inspire them with the latest interiors trends.

These new homes will be set behind the neon-lit façade of the original dog-racing track, a landmark building in the area that was restored to former glories last month, eight years after the stadium was closed. The lights were installed in 1951, adding new glamour to the original 1930s building, and bring a unique decoration to the new use for the heritage site.

Cathy Lloyd, sales and marketing director for L&Q, says: “The heritage of this much-loved stadium will be preserved for generations to come. We are pleased to be able to offer such a wide selection of accommodation on site, with Shared Ownership homes suitable for families and single occupants alike, Stadium Place will ultimately become a thriving new community in the heart of Walthamstow.”

In addition to the range of new homes, Stadium Place will also host a raft of on-site facilities, including a pre-school nursery, café, newsagent and play areas.  The old dog kennels have been converted into storage sheds alongside innovative ‘pocket allotments’, which will be available to use by some of the Shared Ownership residents.

Walthamstow is very well connected, just 15 minutes from the West End on the Victoria Line from Walthamstow Central and with a wide array of other links across the capital on bus and Overground. As well as excellent shopping of its own, Walthamstow nurtures a strong local cultural and arts scene

Prices for Shared Ownership apartments at Stadium Place start from £80,000, a 25% share of the market value of £320,000 for a one-bedroom home. One-bedroom houses start from £98,750 (a 25% share of £395,000) and three-bedroom maisonettes are available for £127,500 (a 25% share of £510,000).
