Brexit fears don’t appear at London’s largest self-build show

Posted 2 November 2016 by Keith Osborne

A growing audience at one of this autumn's exhibitions suggests many don't fear property market repercussions from the vote to leave the EU...

Any concerns that the property market may suffer as a result of the EU referendum result in June may have been out of place, judging by the increase in the number of visitors to the London Homebuilding & Renovating Show this autumn compared to 2015.

With an 11% increase in visitor numbers, and almost equivalent gender numbers (51% men to 49% women), it appears that interest in build a brand new home from scratch is more popular than ever to the crowds heading to some 350 exhibitors at ExCeL in September, according to figures and feedback now released by organisers Centaur Home Interest Media.

Those that attended were also happy to increase their budget compared to last year, with the average budget up 2% to £123,000, while many were already under way with their project (18%) or planning to start it within six months (44%). Nearly one-fifth of visitors (18%) were planning to build their own home.

Nick Noble, deputy managing director of Centaur Home Interest Media, says: “Every year we aim to exceed our previous targets and diversify the offerings for our committed, dedicated visitors. Figures following our internal research proved once again that we’ve been successful in our approach to deliver all services and products required to start, progress or finalise a project, all under one roof and with A-Z guidance to hand.

“Another positive point to note is the consumer confidence which was witnessed at this show which was the first event post-Brexit vote – we’ve noticed that visitors haven’t been perturbed by the referendum or changed their property plans and are continuing to work on their live projects, for which they have also put a higher budget aside. If we fuel this momentum, we’ll become a nation of self-builders, contributing proactively to increase the UK’s housing quota.”

Next year’s London show will be held at ExCeL, London, from 22-24 September 2017.
