London Developer Extends Its Stamp Duty Holiday

Posted 1 February 2021 by Keith Osborne

Regardless of government decisions, Anthology will continue to offer a break from Stamp Duty after 31 March 2021...

Unless Chancellor Rishi Sunak takes the decision to extend the Stamp Duty holiday due to end on 31 March, those looking to buy a new home are now likely to miss out on savings of up to £15,000, so Anthology has decided to extend the initiative on its own developments around London until June 2021.

Announced during the first lockdown in July last year, the relief saw the Stamp Duty threshold raised from £125,000 to £500,000, a welcome boost to prospective and existing homeowners. The scheme so far has helped nine out ten people get on or move up the property ladder. Anthology has experienced a record number of sales since the announcement.

Steve Bangs, managing director for Anthology, part of Lifestory, said: “The Stamp Duty holiday boosted the property industry during a rather difficult year, with over 31% higher transactions in December 2020 compared to the year before, but with the end of the scheme so early whilst we are in another lockdown is simply not the way forward to keep the momentum going and drive the industry forward in 2021.

“The tight deadline will see an outstanding 100,000 property transactions which will simply not complete before the deadline and with no set end date with the lockdown 3.0, it is only fair that homebuyers also get the same opportunity which were given to those during the first lockdown. We sincerely hope that the government listen to the combined industry plea to extend the scheme to help purchasers in a year set to be as equally as shaky as 2020. In the meantime, Anthology will continue to help our customers with an extension of the scheme until 30th June 2021.’’

Anthology has a selection of one-, two- and three- bedroom homes available across London which has been offering savings of up to £15,000 with the cuts to Stamp Duty.
