Show Home Room By Room: Aspen at Consort Place, Canary Wharf
Set to make its mark on the Canary Wharf skyline, Aspen at Consort Place is one of the most highly anticipated developments of the near future. A ‘vertical village’ with an aim to reinvigorate the local area, Aspen at Consort Place will be a vibrant new community with a hotel, bars, cafés and a restaurant alongside beautiful apartments with mesmerising city and river views.
Here, we speak to Charlie Caswell and Patrycja Madecka from HBA Residential, the interior designers for this project, to provide a quick tour of the aspirational apartments and understand the process and detail behind the creative design.
Living room
Patrycja Madecka: “Our aim for the living area was to connect place and space, whilst creating an exquisite and layered room to relax and take in the entrancing views. The colour scheme in the living room, and seen throughout the whole apartment, was inspired by the richness and the vibrancy of the cargo that was historically brought to the West India Docks. Various spices, raw coffee beans and indigo dyes would have been experienced in this area of the UK for the first time and we wanted to make this pivotal moment in the area’s heritage key to the design.”
Charlie Caswell: “The living area is the centre of the home and it was therefore critical that the history of Canary Wharf remained visible but was successfully translated into a liveable, contemporary design. In addition, it was important to the team that deep and rich materials such as leather and wood were integrated, not only to revert back to the industrial heritage of the area, but to build a multi-sensory textured experience for residents in this significant space.”
Patrycja: “You can see a remarkable light feature here, and this is by a Japanese artist who was inspired by the cityscape being reflected by the water. We thought this was a perfect accessory for the room and a poetic way of connecting Aspen at Consort Place with its surroundings.”
Kitchen
Charlie: “In any apartment, a kitchen needs to stand out as one of the most welcoming areas of the home – we feel this contrasting colour scheme adds soul and texture to a warming social space. Luxury is also a consistent theme throughout the apartments, and we felt that the use of modern copper bronze tones increased the sense of opulence.”
Bathroom
Patrycja: “The bathroom design is striking in its simplicity. A bathroom is a tranquil sanctuary, and we wanted this space to be idyllic and present the high quality of a bespoke, hotel design.”
Charlie: “It is difficult to be adventurous when designing bathrooms, as the space needs to avoid being lacklustre but must retain an aura of serenity. We enjoyed introducing this incredible 3D tile in the shower, which gives the room a sense of excitement and individuality.”
Master bedroom
Charlie: “In the master bedroom, we have focused on the concept of ‘the luxury of function’. As designers, we understand the actions for every room and aim to drive convenience - that is the true essence of luxury living. For example, by introducing these sleek built-in wardrobes, we can encourage residents to adopt appropriate organisation habits and promote a better quality of living.”
Patrycja: “The rest of the apartment is bright in colour, however for the master bedroom we had a more neutral palette to promote a sense of calm. We also included a charming chair and table spot overlooking the views – to me, this is the ideal place for daydreaming.”
Guest bedroom
Patrycja: “This smaller bedroom is certainly exposed to the beautiful views, and we ensured that specific elements were added that assisted in capturing the light. For instance, we chose furniture pieces such as tables with glass surfaces and reflective marble on the dressing tables. These components were additionally specified as they provide the most minimal disruption to the view.”
“The theme of Canary Wharf’s trade and industrial heritage also continues here – there are dark metal trims and leather detailing throughout, which were materials that were sold at the docks.”
Charlie: “As life will evolve out of lockdown, it has almost been confirmed that homeworking will continue. This room would be an ideal home office as well as a guest bedroom – whilst there is so much natural light, this space offers versatility in furniture arrangement.”
