Furniture Village Reveal Their Top 6 Homeware Trends For 2020

Posted 23 February 2020

Homeware retailer Furniture Village have announced their take on 2020 interiors trends ...

The most important thing about any interiors trend is that it can translate easily into any number of spaces, and by creating more than one look for each theme, homeware retailer Furniture Village are hoping to give their customers every reason to try them out for themselves. Interiors Editor Rory Robertson hones in on the big six.

As one of the UK’s largest furniture and bed retailers, they pride themselves on being able to offer customers something in every style for every room, all under one roof. From in-house collections, to exclusive designs from leading brands such as Ercol and Harrison Spinks, there's a host of homeware to choose from.

Some colours and ideas are consistently carried forward from season to season. Furniture Village note that pink hues are a prime example. For example, Millenial Pink escalated into a consistent recurring trend over the last three years. The uplifting shades of pink are still proving as popular as ever and for spring Furniture Village have taken inspiration from a natural palette of dusty rose pinks and richer russets.

Something that they have also touched on is the rising popularity of Japanese-inspired design. Furniture Village predict that, thanks to the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the upcoming Olympic Games, this incredible country will be well and truly on everyone's radar. Inspired by the beauty of the Japanese spring, they have created a relaxing take on the trend that still remains true to its core principles of form and function.

Alongside this, you’ll also find a playful interpretation of retro style and favoured new colour combinations such as pistachio and caramel.

Over the last few years Furniture Village have witnessed and taken note of the definition of a ‘neutral’ hue shifting to incorporate earthier shades of pink, blue and green and their new a Hint of Mint trend reflects this. A sophisticated twist on a pastel palette, Furniture Village think these ‘new neutrals’ are a great way to add a soft tint to a space without it becoming a dominating feature.

1. Architectural Structures

This industrial-inspired look is all about creating clean lines and interesting shapes using furniture and accessories. From x-frames and angled legs, to clean lines and curves, the key to this trend is simplicity. Set against a backdrop of distressed brickwork, Furniture Village have combined concrete, metal, wood and glass to create a contemporary look that works across office or dining room spaces. For the home office look Furniture Village have introduced rich shades of amber and ochre, which complement the warm grain of the woods found across the Lista Desk and Chennai Shelving Unit. Their dining scheme showcases sculptural accessories in clean, considered shapes that help to elevate the trend.

2. Pistachio and Caramel

Furniture Village have tipped this calm colour palette to be one of their favourites for spring/summer 2020. Combining soft pistachio greens with rich shades of brown and caramel, this pairing balances warm and cool tones to create a restful and liveable look. To recreate this trend, they have chosen crafted, yet understated furniture that’s well suited to everyday living. Soft Italian leathers in pleasing neutral shades are complemented by natural wood finishes and industrial-inspired black frames. Set against a light pistachio backdrop, flashes of caramel are introduced through smaller accessories such as cushions and vases and further enhanced by wooden tones and natural elements such as pampas grass. Small touches of gold found across mirrors and lamps, add a subtle touch of luxury that offsets the earthier elements of the look.

3. Retro Rainbow

From Mid-Century furniture to 70’s styling and 60’s patterns, retro-inspired interiors are an on-going trend, according to Furniture Village. Combining the best bits from each decade with a bright and bold rainbow palette, the Retro Rainbow look is all about having a bit of fun with your home styling and the more playful you can make it feel, the better! Statement furniture in block colours set the tone and soft furnishings and occasional tables are used to layer up the theme. The great thing about this trend is that you can add as much or as little as you like, depending on your personal preference. Paint can also be used across the walls to inject an extra flash of brightness, but Furniture Village note that they recommend leaving in enough white or neutral space to balance out the more saturated elements of the scheme. Painting only part of the wall – such as the bottom half – is a good way to help create this equilibrium. Likewise, when it comes to pattern, use it sparingly and only introduce one or two key elements – like a rug or a painting, for example. This way this way you’ll still achieve impact whilst ensuring that it doesn’t feel too busy!

4. Japanese

Spaces remain calm and uncluttered with no more furniture than is strictly necessary; in true Japanese form, the designs speak for themselves. A largely neutral palette can be found throughout but flashes of teal, amber and light pink add character and liveliness, echoing those first signs of spring that appear after a long winter. Eye-catching design details, such as gold capped legs and a stunning ceramic top serve to elevate the scheme, adding a hint of understated luxury that chimes effortlessly.

5. A Hint of Mint

A potent mix of calming blue and revitalising green, this invigorating and optimistic hue can be channelled in any room of the home. For the season ahead, Furniture Village have played to its strengths as a neutral shade and created a scheme that is pared-back and cool. Design-led upholstered furniture in elegant shades of grey sit strikingly against a fresh mint backdrop that complements the space without dominating. The new ercol Bellaria chaise sofa is perfect for this trend. Exclusive to Furniture Village and featuring a Mid-Century inspired wooden frame, it suits the look and feel of this space down to a T. Soft furnishings and smaller accessories in a range of blue-green hues enhance the motif and touches of brown help to ground the look, moving it on from the classic pastel trends of previous seasons.

6. Russett and Dusky Rose

A multitude of delicate tones and textures are mixed and matched throughout each look to craft spaces that are multi-layered and inviting. Tactile linens sit alongside soft velvets and natural wood finishes to create a feeling of intimacy and warmth, that will work for every season. Darker, russet accents reference naturally occurring pigments and will add depth and maturity to the palette, preventing it from feeling too saccharine. Carefully curated decorative accessories with unfussy sculptural silhouettes add the finishing touch; but limit these to a select few to ensure that the space feels fresh and uncluttered.
